Question Experiences with new auto behind 5.4 in '00s?

Considering an F150 to replace my wreaked :-( '90 model. Noticed that the 5.4 gets an auto tranny formerly used on lesstorquey engines. Question - anyone know if it will hold up? I'm ordering the towing/cooling package also as it is needed in our hot weather. Tranny will see a lot of stop and go in Atlanta traffic.

Thanks for your input!!

It will hold up, and its a strong tranny. Very smart tranny I might add, because it adapts to your driving style.

Thumbs up

When they started using the 4r70w for the 5.4 v8 its was made sure it would holdup.

If it's a 5.4L '00 it won't have the 4R70, it'll have the 4R100, and it's a beast, you'll have no problems unless you're planning on pulling more than 1000 ft/lbs of torque.
See my post on the "4R70W/4R100, what's the difference?" thread.

In late 99 I think they switched to the 4R70W behind the 5.4 and I know for 2000 they did, because I have one. Only California emission equipment gets you the 4R100.

That is correct all F150 5.4L's (with the exception of the "Ca. Emmission Package" and the Lightning's) get the 4R70W including the new 7700! You will have to go up to a F250 Super Duty to get the 4R100. I was real kean on the 7700 until I found this out. The "U" code tranny for the 4R70W is on the door sticker in all the 7700's I looked at as well as every other F150 5.4L I looked at. All the F250 SD's had the "E" code for the 4R100. So you see what I bought to tow with....

Hey 2byford,
You shouldn't have any problems what so ever, especailly ordering the Trailer Tow Package. I have the 2000 5.4 Liter/ Automatic.... it's great!
I've done research before ordering my truck, because I plan to get a 20' Skeeter Bass Boat in the near future and these are the facts. The 5.4 Liter(SOHC)/Automatic V8 260 hp.@ 4500 rpm., 345 ft-Ibs.@ 2300 rpm.
Some say and I've read that Ford increased the hp. to 265 on the 2000's. You'll be getting a great truck and should take care of most if not all your needs!

Welcome aboard.... this is a great site!

Okay, pending a little investigation I stand corrected, but I am told that all the 5.4s are 4R100's, I can check for sure on Monday and I'll post whether I'm right or wrong, (I'm sure plenty of crow will be served if I'm wrong)
I do know that 11 models of 4R100s are 5.4 L boxes, being the 1S, 2A, 2B, 3X ,3Z, 4Z, 3Y and the 4H, 5H 4K, 5K. I'll check, though....
As an added service, if anyone wants to be ABSOLUTELY sure, if you check the ID tag on the tranny, (driver's side just forward of the extension housing) you'll see a code in the same format as those above, if it's one of those, it's a 4R100, for sure, if it's another one post it & I'll tell you, and if it's a different format (3lettes, numbers or number before the letter) it'snot a 4R100.

The 4R70's built at Sharonville, (all in cars, no truck 4R70s built here) have codes that begin PKG - ** so if it has a PKG code it's likely a 4R70. But, as I don't know Livonia's codes, it may be another prefix.....
Confused yet?

GBE

Factory_Tech,

I have to admit that I did not check for any of these numbers..but I do have a green sticker ("prior to repair") stuck on the tranny that clearly says "2000 4R70W..see TSB 99-14." I <ASSumed> this was a 4R70W tranny.

However,

The 98 5.4L I had..I thought the same thing (it had an Orange sticker)and I think it also had 4R70W on it and I noticed after I traded it in and the dealer posted it for sale on their web page...it was listed as having the E4OD tranny.

I am familiar with the truck..buck can you be just a bit more specific on where to look for this tag? I am assuming I have to look underneath?

I'd like to know myself......

Okay, I see something I understand, the Orange stickers are definitley 4R100s, I have those stickers at work, what that is, I understand, is that if thiose trannys come in for repair, the dealer is to remove it, replace the tranny with a new one and send the old one back to Sharonville for validation.
Validation then tears it down and evaluates the deviation on the box....I don't know what the deviation is, but it'll be easy for me to find out, I'll post something Mondya on that.
And, I'll check the 7HB code, the "7" series that we build are all deisal cases, so I think that the '98 7 series may be a Livonia 4R70W. Same thing, I'll check on Monday and let everyone know. Prior to the 99.5 model year, I'm not sure about when you got a 4R70 or 4R100, my info was for 99.5 and up on all the 5.4 being 4R100. geesh noqw I'm confused, but I'll get answers, and clear this up...
