down shifts by itself

I have a 95 f150 4x4 flareside v8 (350?) and the other day it started to shift up and down by itself. It also seemed to idle a little faster. Then the next day it ran fine. Today I was going down the highway when it started doing it again. Is there a sensor or something in this year that can cause this? The overdrive seems to be working fine. In high gear it shifts down a gear but not as low a gear as pushing in the overdrive button. HELP!

Could be a speed sensor. I had the problem two months ago. An easy way to check is to set the cruise control; and if it doesn't work and the trans sputters. Then it's probably the VSS (vehicle speed sensor).

cruise control

My cruise stopped working a couple of weeks agp, I thought it was the fuse but I haven't checked it yet. When I try to put it on nothing happens.

It's common for the Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) to cause this symptom. As the sensor wears out it starts sending false signals to the computer that cause the downshifts.

The sensor is on the driver's side of the transmission, where the shift cable attaches. There is a connector with several wires that plug into the sensor. Have that changed and it should fix the problem.

I hardly ever notice my tranny downshifting except for the 3rd to 2nd downshift. It is slightly noticeable and nearly always happens at exactly 30mph.
