Trans Cooler

I looked under my new F-150 tonight and i notcied a small cooler by the front a/c condensor and i was like dang thats a small trans cooler and i followed the lines back to see its a PS cooler. I see the lines going into the rad and into the trans. I tow a little bit and i want this trans to last. Should i add a second cooler or would it reduce pressure too much for the trans? Also, what kind of transmission do i have, its a 2001 F-150 4.2L V6 auto.
THanks
Pat

Cool

HI!... You have a 4R70-W tranny. I did'nt like the factory tranny cooler or where it was located, behind the bumper so I installed a "HPP" cooler kit with electric fan.

Definitely get the cooler. A good one shouldn't cause much pressure drop and it's cheap insurance.

If you want to go a little further, get a new tranny pan with a drain plug to make changin the fluid much easire. Some even allow you to have a few extra quarts of tranny fluid. Problem here is the pan I've seen is a little pricey, ($180 or more).

I just replaced my pan with a Ford pan with a drain plug. I paid full pop retail of $41. Order from www.oemfordparts.com for about $30.

Mine's the 4R100. The 4x4 comes with the pan with a plug. Keep in mind the filter is also different. Slightly longer tube to get down into the slightly deeper pan.

Even if you don't, if you have a speeder, dropping the pan is a breeze. I dropped my pan and accumulator valve body 3 times in 3 days tweaking the shift kit. I think there are about 273 bolts between the 2! (ok, about 20 for the pan, and 14 for the VB)

FamilyRide,

Problem is you got a 4R100. Doesn't that come stock with a plug? I don't think Ford OEM's a plugged pan for a 4R70W.

Tiger,

The 4R100 in the 4X4's have a drain but not the 2 wheel drive like mine. But I think you're right that Ford doesn't OEM one with a drain for the 4R70W but I can't say for sure.
