Lightning tranny on 4.6L?

Will this work?

I have a 4.6L 5spd now, and was thinking about the swap. If it would work, does anyone know of a link I could go to for prices and for more info?

Also, does anyone know what the gear ratios in the Lightning tranny are?

A 4R100 will not mate to a 4.6, it may bolt up but getting the electronics to recognize it may be a serious problem.

God Damn it!!! Isn't there a solution to my problem? I want to replace my 5spd tranny with a tranny that could hold lots more, but nothing seems to work.

Will the manual tranny's from the superduty trucks bolt right up to the 4.6L?

Thanks, i'm getting frustrated.

The bolt pattern for the 4.6L and 5.4L, and I think the 6.8L, are identical. A Superduty manual will bolt to the 4.6L.

Thanks Mark. The 5.4 and the 6.8 have the same bolt pattern, I knew that, but I wasn't sure about the 4.6. How much trouble would it be to get the PCM to recognize the 4R100 on a 4.6???

To get the PCM to recognize and control a 4R100 instead of a 4R70W, you need to write all new code.

It would probably be easier to get a 5.4L/4R100 PCM and change the wiring to match it.

Neither is easy, but at least the second is possible!

I'm hesitant to sound like an idiot... but here goes...

Wwhich is the 4R100 and which is the 4R70W.

If I were go to go with the Superduty manual tranny, what connections would I need for it? Is it just for the speedo, temperature, and minor stuff like that? If I don't connect any wires to the manual tranny of the superduty, would it still work? I've read that automatics wont shift into gears without being connected to the computer, but that the manual tranny's didn't need to be connected in order to work. Well, at least that's what I think.

The 4R100 is the heavier duty transmission. That's the one that is used in the SuperDutys.

I don't know what connections need to be made on the manual transmission, but whatever they are your 4.6L computer probably won't recognize them because it is looking for an automatic transmisson.

I have a manual transmission in it now though. I figured it shouldn't be too hard swapping any wires that are going to it to the manual tranny of the superduty. Besides the speed sensor, and a temp sensor (i think that's what it is) are there any other wires that run to the manual tranny?

by the way, thanks for all the help, I get frustrated easily.
