Transmission not engaging now truck won't start up

Was pulling into my garage as usual and shifted to neutral when my wheel hit the chuck (stops the vehicle from hitting my wall). Then I noticed the shifter didn't feel right. Felt pretty loose as I was able to go through all the gears while not feeling the engagement in each gear. For instance when I had put it in reverse there was no engagement. Then I put it in "Drive" and still no engagement. Turned off the truck and placed it into Park. Tried to turn on the ignition but truck no longer starts up. I'm thinking the transmission is still in drive but the shifter is in "park". Therefore, I'm not able to startup the truck anymore. Any idea what's going on?

Yes, that could be true or like everything mechanical, parts tend to fail over time. To my knowledge, this is the original transmission and truck has about 191k on it. Basically, if the shifter is in Park position I can still push the truck around as if it was in neutral. However, I'm not able to start it up since the ignition thinks it's in gear? Is there something i can do to reset the transmission so i can start it up and drive it to the shop? Or am I pretty much screwed and have to get it towed?

Have you checked to see if the shift lever is still connected to the transmission (cable)?

is that cable accessible from inside the cabin or from underneath? Any pics or diagrams, would be helpful. Thanks in advance!

Set the parking brake and then start following the cable from under the dash, through the firewall, and to the transmission underneath. Have a helper wiggle the lever, if possible.

Found the issue.....the plastic bushing inside the shift linkage cable housing was worn out and had slipped off. Picked it out with a screwdriver and replaced it with Dorman #14041 (contains 4 bushings). The bushing with numbers on it was the bushing to use to replace with. Thank you @projectSHO89 for your help!

I figured it wouldn't be rocket science once you got under there.
