planetary gear

Hello everyone. My 2006 ford f150 FX4 has been acting up lately with the transmission. The overdrive light has been flashing and getting a "trans fault " on my dash. Took it to the dealership to get it checked and they said the main problem is the planetary gear. I just hit 140K. They said with parts and labor it's 3500. Could I get it rebuild, Or go somewhere cheaper? Thanks.

Yes, you could get it rebuilt cheaper somewhere else. The dealer is almost always the most expensive place to take it.

But it might not need to be rebuilt. Getting a second opinion is always a good idea.

15 yrs of rebuilding these transmissions, I have never seen a failed/broken planetary gear. the truck most likely displayed a gear ratio error code, which means its not shifting to the next gear when the computer expected or commanded. this is most likely caused by a failed forward or direct clutch.

$3500 is a bit steep, going rate is around $2000
