Aw crap, there goes NCSU's tranny...
Was driving back from the grocery store when the truck made a funny 'shift' out of O/D, only to have "TRANS FAULT" pop up on the display and the O/D light start blinking a few seconds later.
I tried scanning for a code using the ScanGaugeII and even my Xcal3, but both report back "No DTC Codes Found".
All I can say right now is that 1st and R appear to be gone, so it looks like I'm in the market for a new tranny. Suggestions?

Do your research, and then do it again on shops and what route you want taken to fix the issue. I cannot stress it enough to only let the BEST of the BEST touch things like your trans, axles and driveline.
I just had my tranny poured through and repaired to the tune of just about 1900 bucks which included the torque converter, a new transfer case which ran about 1500 bucks, both axles rebuilt completely to the tune of just over 1200 bucks, and a new front and rear CV style drive shafts for for around 1200 bucks. I also rebuilt the 4x4 system too (IWE's, Solenoid, and vacuum lines). Most of this because the people I thought where qualified and came recommended by many people could not handle the level of work I needed.
Even if you have to make a little bit of a trip to get quality work, I would do it. I normally travel east to Dallas/Fort Worth (6 hours) or North to Denver (8 Hours); but I trusted a few local shops for somethings and shoudln't have..

Hmmmm, so I called around and all the shops are busy until at least tomorrow. The guy I'd like to use said the earliest he could look at it would be Wednesday.
So, against my wife's recommendation, I take the truck to work this morning. In the parking lot I verify that 1st and R are still dead. In either gear the truck just seems to lock up and I can give it all the gas I want and it does nothing but let the RPMs climb. Sure enough as I'm sitting there the "TRANS FAULT" message comes back up and the O/D light starts blinking.
So I put it in D, creep out of my parking spot and head to work. While driving around the neighborhood I toss it into 2nd... There's a pause, then a "clunk" and a jolt, and then it seemed to be fine. I get stopped at the stoplight at the entrance to our subdivision and when I hit the gas I notice it seemed to take off alot better. Makes me wonder....
I get to the parking lot at work, put the truck in R and lo and behold, it works! I back up a few feet, then put it in 1st, and that works too! I park it, cut off the engine, let it sit for a minute then fire it back up. 1st and R are working again so I take it for a lap around parking lot and the "TRANS FAULT" message seems to have gone away.
I'm going to see how it acts over the next couple days, then might take it in while I go on vacation and let the guys take a look.

When was the last time you had your fluid and filter changed? Check your fluid level and see if it smells burnt.
I vote against driving it around... Your truck had a mechanical problem in a very complicated area. It can't heal itself, it can only get worse. I lost o/d and barely made it home 6 miles away. The shop said my trans had completely gone out and the fluid was very burnt. I know that it was because of driving that 6 miles cuz my trans never gets above 150*

Some background info as requested:
Currently has 62,808 miles with 3.73 gears and 35" tires. Just had the transmission serviced (along with the clutch, & axle, the fuel system, the steering system and other routine maintenance items) at 60,469 miles.
I just checked the transmission fluid, and besides appearing to be a bit overly full, it looks and smells fine.
Drove home and back to work during lunch (7 miles each way) and experienced one hard shift. I'll be keeping a close eye on it and, more than likely, will be taking it to a transmission specialist on Wednesday to get everything checked out. At this time there are still no codes to be found using both my ScanGaugeII and XCal3.
