looking at a parts truck...trying to figure out tranny (01 w/ 5.4L)

I am looking at picking up a parts truck (also has long travel front suspension & cab cage). Not sure if I will swap parts on to my current truck or just reassemble this one. It is a 2000 XLT scab w/ 5.4L & low miles. The owner thinks it has an e40d in it but I thought 2000 and later were 4r70w or 4r100? I have a vin but just searched for a vin decoder to find out the tranny is not in the vin. any help would be great!

1998 was the last year for the E4OD. It is either a 4R70W or a 4R100.

Is the door sticker still there? It will be on the driver's door pillar. There is a TR and a letter underneath. If that letter is a "U" it is a 4R70W, if it is an "E" it is a 4R100.

not sure, I will call and ask tomorrow. Just trying not to bother the guy too much. Isnt there an easy way to ID it based on how many bolts are on the drain pan or something too?

I think the only 2000's with 4R100's were with the 7700 package. Easiest way to see if it's one of those is look at the wheels - the 7700's were 7 lug.

its def not a 7700 otherwise the long travel suspension would not work on the truck...and they are 5 lugs

Yup, the 4R100 could be ordered with the 5.4L if you paid mo money.

ok got it home and starting to get to work, what is the easiest way to service the tranny and start fresh, I was looking for a drainplug and obviously it isnt there so do I have to pull the pan to drain it? I want to put in a new filter, gasket, etc...is there anything else I should look at while I am in there? Also how do we fill it back up? Just through the dipstick plug or what? Also I am assuming I am best off using ford motorcraft atf? Anything else you guys would address while it is apart?

Any Mercon V fluid is fine.

You have to drop the pan and pull the torque converter drain plug. You fill it through the dipstick.
