98 V8 SprCab Tranny Swap

Hey there.

Just an interesting thought today, and possibly a fun if not PITA project.

I have a 1998 F150 4.6 v8 Supercab with the 4R70W transmission.

I was wondering if anyone has ever tried this, and what would I need to accomplish this?

The obvious
1) Transmission
2) clutch
3) shifter

And possibly a different length driveshaft?
The costs of this is nothing, as most of it will hopefully be scrap parts from a buddy of mine. I just need some sort of list for when I go to get the stuff.

As always thanks

You are going to have to address the computer because it will be looking for an automatic transmission and will act stupid as hell when there isn't one there. People always forget that one. You can do it via a computer swap or a tune. But remember, a computer swap may involve a PATS issue too.

Well the computer isn't the issue. Its going to be fixed, thats not the problem.

I just want to make sure that the integrity of the tranny and the like will be good.

Did my list seem to cover what I need?

Add: Pedals, clutch hydraulic system, pilot bearing, flywheel, Shifter boots, cutting hole in floor. There are two styles of trannies that came stock in the f-150. 1997 and 1998 had the shift lever 55mm closer to the front of the truck. Bear this in mind when cutting the hole in the floor. Other than the shifter location the trannies are the same.

EDIT: The flywheel will either be a 6 or an 8 bolt pattern. Check the 8th digit of your vin. 6= 8 bolt and W = 6 bolt.

Well its a six bolt. Yay.

I have another question for yall.

The hydraulic clutch is connected to the master cylinder right? And are the master cylinders between the automatic and the standard different.

Also would it just be simpler to just use a spring clutch?

Thanks for the amazing amount of help so far.

The brake master cylinders are identical regardless of the transmission. The clutch system has a master cylinder of its own to the right of the brake master cylinder. The clutch uses a diaphragm spring regardless of how it is actuated. Your truck uses a hydraulic piston to push on the spring instead of a cable actuated lever.

IIRC, the 97-98 didn't have PATS, as the Feds never required it at that time.

i was gonna say..97-98 does not have pats..

if it acts at all like my 95 mustang when i did the swap, it wont effect anything too bad.. itlll just hold the revs a bit as you slow down.. a computer for a manual truck would be the best bet
