Slipping Gears, Wierd Sounds, And Blinking OD Light
Slipping Gears, Wierd Sounds, And Blinking OD Light
2001 Supercrew. 190,xxx miles. 5.4, auto tranny, 4x4
So a couple of days ago while leaving school, I noticed an odd vibration When i first put it in drive. Went away after a few seconds. Didnt do it all the time, just occasionaly. A couple days later, that same vibration was accomponied by a faint griding sound. That was intermitent for about a day, then it disappeared for a few days.
Then today, I start getting a combination of the metalic grinding sound and almost a howlingish sound (sorry I know that discription sucks, sounds almost like a turbine firing up, just not as loud). It I would go in drive, it would miss for a few seconds, then find itself and move forward kinda hard. Driving home form work today, I notice my OD light on my shifter is blinking, and sometimes the OD would work, and others it would act like its in first.
My original tranny siezed up on me a year ago, and I had this one put in to the tune of $1500. This was SUPPOSED to be a rebuilt ford tranny. There is no way that I should be having these issues already is there? I mean, ive only towed maybe two or three times in the last year, and it was no wheres near what this truck is capable of.
Im parking it for the night, because I really dont wanna strain it anymore then I have. Anyone have any insight as to what is going on and what the fix is? Thanks

I had this problem on my mom's expedition, there is a small "solenoid" ,I think thats what its labeled as, that controls the shifting that needs to be replaced. I will look for the reciept and give ya an actual name if I can find it. Cant remeber if I got one from O'Reily or if I had to go to Ford on this one. Not a hard thing to fix, just a pain in the ***, on the expedition anyway. Good luck
The solenoids are not going to cause noises or keep the vehicle from taking off by design.
It sounds to me like something is eating itself and the debris has gotten to the pump. Grinding and howling is never good.

Thats what I figured. I saw a lot of threads talking about the solenoid causing that blinking light, but no one ever had any noise associated with it. I also read that normal scan tools cant read codes related to tranny issues and that only ford can do it?
There are about 50 things that can make the OD light flash. Each one of them will set a code that tells the tech where to start looking.
It's true that it takes a Ford specific scan tool to read Ford trans codes. Many (most?) independent shops have the right tool, as do all Ford dealers. The places that read codes free do not have it.
