Tranny Swap

I know a 4R100 will bolt into place to replace my blown 4R70W in a 2001 4x4. My question is how about the electronics. They snap in place? If so do I need a chip?

Unfortunately, the computer in your truck isn't capable hardware wise to operate a 4R100 transmission.

You could change the computer, but you are in for a whole lot of work and expense. There are several issues going this route, starting with PATS and wiring harnesses.

You could also get an aftermarket controller. Doing that will require a tune to shut off the transmission functions on the stock computer though.

Unfortunately there is no fast, cheap or easy solution to this swap, but it can definitely be done if you choose which way you want to attack it and get to it.

at the very least, you're looking at a new pcm, new flywheel, new transmission dipstick tube, extending the front driveshaft and shortening the rear driveshaft, swapping in the code 7 longer torsion bars, moving your exhaust crossover back, the PATS, wiring harness issues, etc.

not an easy or cheap swap by any means.

All of these things are reasons why I tell people that it's usually cheaper to buy a whole new truck. LOL

That swap will make the 4R100 swap look like child's play!

You guys are making it sound like a rebuilt 4R70W is the way to go. Just how tough can they make them though. How much hp and torque can they take? Tell me that then i'll make up my mind. BTW, what are PATS?

PATS= Passive Anti Theft System (basically the whole system that has the chip in the ignition key

they can make 70s built stronger then a stock 100. I dont have the exact HP/Tq numbers

The (PATS) is the anti theft system. If you swap computers you would need to have it turned off by a tuner or have it reprogrammed at the dealer before your truck would start! (I had mine turned off)
Before anyone can give you even a guise at what power level a built tranny would hold you will need to give more info.
1.what truck?( single cab,super-cab,super-crew)
2.tire size,gearing?
3. What motor do you have and how much power are you planing to make?

Ask Darrin about some of the 70's he builds and what his real world numbers are. his latest one i seen in MMFF mag was a 04 marauder? 11 second 4 door car and still a dd.

although the 6speed would be very cool lol. the 100 is a lot of effort to swap if you think about it. not saying it isnt doable.

back to Darrin, he has built my 70w, its in my big truck with a lightning swap and 10# boost.

I'm running a 4.6L extended cab 4x4. I'm aiming to get 450hp out of it by the time i'm done. I'm running stock 3.55's (and don't plan on changing that any time soon), with 33" tires (Probley go to 35's on the next set).
