Rebuild myself?

i was wondering how hard would it be to buy a rebuild kit for my 4R70W?? as you all know my trans isn't long for the world. i was gonna go to the junkyard and buy a 4R70W and rebuild that then switch my trannys...i have NO idea at all on how to even get gears/clutchs out of my tranny any an all help will greatly help. i know mostly how engines work but nothing about trannys.

Thanks guys!

It can be done by the back yard mechanic with the right tools. Get a manual for rebuilding your exact transmission and I have seen transmission rebuild kits out there. There is alot of small parts but if your organized, do some reasearch on what extra parts you will need outside of the kit and have the time, it can be done.

At the very minimum you are going to need a clutch spring compressor, lip seal tools and either a gauge bar or an h-gauge to measure the intermediate clutch stack and the clearance to the reverse drum to determne which selective thrust washer you need.

Without those things the only internal work you can do is just replace any damaged hard parts and the clutch frictons and steels, which is a VERY bad idea. That isn't a rebuild and if there was a problem it's still going to be there and burn up the work you do.

Ebay has some. I googled 4R70W transmission rebuild kits and got over 2000 hits, take your pick.
