My O/D is not working!! HELP

Today when i was getting on the highway to take a little trip i was accelerating and suddenly i felt no power my RPMs where like at 4500 and i was going about 45 the truck was like on neutral.
That happened when it went on overdrive later i clicked O/D off it it got power again. It seams to run fine in 1st, 2nd and 3rd but when going into overdrive it just goes into neutral.
Any ideas of what could be causing this? it is not giving me any lights on the dashboard.

by the way i have a 2005 f150 5.4L fx4 with 40,000 miles.
Thanks.

This happened to me on my '02 F150 4.6L 4x4 but it sorta fixed itself soon after... I lost OD and got it back but now it shifts hard into OD. Supposedly it's fixable without replacing the tranny.

With only 40k miles talk to your dealer. Ford might chip in and help with the majority of the repairs.

Yeah, it is a something electrical and little... it's a solenoid (lock out solenoid, maybe) that controls the flow of fluid into the OD "section" of the valve body. Sorry if I don't have the terms right, but I'm trying to remember what the local tranny shop said about mine.

Unfortunately, to repair/replace this solenoid requires removal of the tranny, which is where the bulk of the expense to fix lays.

All of the solenoids can easily be changed with the trans in the truck. There is no such thing as a lock out solenoid.

There is a torque converter lockup solenoid. It controls the torque converter clutch. It has nothing to do with overdrive. Overdrive will work with or without this solenoid.

It could be the overdrive band has broke, or there is a problem in the overdrive servo.

Sorry for confusing terms, I don't even pretend to be a mechanic or even try to talk like one.

I believe it was actually servo that's failing according to the local trans shop. He claimed it cannot be serviced/replaced without removing the trans. Do you know if this is the case?

I'm not a mechanic, either.

I think the trans does need to come out to access the overdrive servo.

same exact thing happend to me 3 weeks ago get above 40mph when in overdrive and the truck acts like you put her in neutral. with my truck it was the solinoid and the band that engages the overdrive gear. appearently the band burnt out and came apart, then a piece of it got stuck in the solinoid port and caused that to burn up as well. it came to an 1800 $$$$ repair. i had an extended warantee that covered it, but the companies get pickey about paying for this stuff. make sure that your tranny fluid level is normal and hopefully not burnt. they want to avoid paying just as much as you do, dont give them a reason not to. its probably just me being stupid, but my truck dosent feel the same. My tranny was basically rebuilt with all the stuff they did, but i dont feel as confident in it as i did before. good luck and for anyone else unless you know transmissions really well or have a friend that does its best to get it to the dealer, crappy option but i would not advise takin it apart yourself.

I've got no extended warranty so I'll be paying full pop... trying to decide whether to get the trans fixed or replace it with a low mileage wrecker trans.

Cool, well not really, just found this thread that is EXACTLY what mine is doing, pinpointed it finally. I was under the understanding the 1-2 accumulator and/or the 2-3 acc. spring were ****, but now I know better. I think I'll replace the 1-2 spring ans 2-3 etc all at the same time, why not.
