Question New Transmission or Rebuild?

Hello

I have a 98 Expy EB 5.4 4WD with 200k. I will do some towing. What is the best way to go? Thanks!

In comparing the two options, rebuilds are just fine, as long as it's a quality job. Have you first checked fluid and did a fluid/ filter job?

A common symptom of low fluid level.

You cannot buy a "new" transmission anything you buy is rebuilt.

Actually, you have three choices: 1) New 2) Remanufactured, and 3) Rebuilt.
I suppose you could buy a whole new transmission from Ford - for cubic bucks - but it wouldn't be worth throwing that much money into a truck with 200k on the clock. Remanufactured transmissions are generally better than rebuilt because the process is much more consistent than Billy Joe Bob down at the corner garage just tossing parts into one somebody blew up. A truly decent rebuild - if you can find somebody you can trust - can be OK though.

In order to get a "new" transmission you would have to steal it from sharonville, good luck with that the dealers cannot get the new ones they get reman.

Yes, I guess I'd have to agree on how hard it would be to truly get a "new" transmission. Besides, a good reman is just as good - as dealers are finding out. I've seen some "rebuilds" that would flat out scare you though.

Any upgrades I should think about? Thank you all for your help!
