Overdrive light flashing

I own a 1998 F250 4.6 2 wheel drive with a 127k miles. Just the other day after driving it about 5 miles the overdrive light started flashing and would not shut off until I shut the vehicle off and restarted it. Tranny fluid level is fine, any clues on what it maybe.

That is the transmission's way of telling you something is wrong.
Have it scanned. It could be minor or major.

Had the truck scanned

My father has a scanner and no trouble codes were found. I noticed it will only flash about 5 minutes after driving. Shut the car off then back on, light is gone until 5 minutes later. The truck has been shifting a little ruff since this started.

My OD light started flashing at 35K. I took it to the dealer, and they replaced the tranny ASAP. Could there be a TSB?

They said nothing, and because of the speed that they were willing to do it, I just said go. It was almost out of warranty. I tow a trailer, but it is only about 6000 lbs. Truck was stolen & recovered a few thousand miles earlier, so that may have had something to do with it. 35K for a tranny seems way early though.

Question Just happened in mine

Driving a '97 that just turned 200,000 miles today. A great runner that looks great too.

This evening while driving home, approx 65 mph, the OD light started flashing. The OD switch was working fine and there were no other noticeable problems. When I turned off the ignition and restarted it the light stayed off.

I've seen several different treads that have covered this and several have mentioned the light that stops after restarting.

Can anyone tell me what they found out, as far as what the problem was?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Guessing this should probably be a new thread but I'll tell you what has happened with mine so far. I have a 2001 F150 5.4 with the blinking OD light. The dealer is trying to tell me the rough shifting, not shifting down like it is supposed to and engine rpm of 3000+ at 70 mph is normal so I took it to a transmission shop. They ran the codes and did some inspection and it turns out the transmission needs major work, probably a full rebuild. The tranny shop did the diagnostics knowing that their shop wouldn't doing the work so it wasn't self serving. So it's at the dealership again.

From what I've read on this message board and others (ahem) it seems like it could be anything from a simple repair to a need for a full rebuild. AAMCO (I know they often get a bad rap) said the repair on my F150 would be anywhere from $1800 - $3000. I'm glad it's a dealer expense on mine. Hopefully yours is something simple and inexpensive!
