5 speed grinding from 2nd to 3rd?
I have a 99 4.2 5 speed with 103k miles that is grinding when I shift from 2nd into 3rd. It seems that it has done this on occasion since it was new, but probably within the last 20k miles it has just gotten worse and worse. Even if I am extreemely soft and gentle when I shift it will grind, not all of the time but alot.
I need some help on what the problem might be. The clutch pedal dosent feel loose or anything, the clutch fluid level looks good, and its not due for a transmission fluid change for mabye 5-10k miles.
any ideas would be appreciated

I would try a fluid change with a Synthetic type oil. This may help, also do a serch here and will get info on your problem. I have a 5 speed and have not had this problem. The gate on this tranny is terrible and needs to be addressed in the sftermarket asap. good luck

from reading other threads here, the 2nd to 3rd grind is pretty common.
my truck has done it since it was new. its usually under higher rpm shifts.
from what i understand it stems from the synchro's being out of whack. dont know much about this, but thats what i have read in other threads.
about 5000 miles ago i switched the tranny fluid and went with mobil 1 synthetic. it made no difference.

I'm hearing more and more about the grinding of these trannys between second and third. Happens to me even when I'm not hard on the throttle. I also have a problem where it won't even go into gear at times after a start. The only fix is to shut the truck off, drop it into first or reverse and then restart it.... I'd be happy if it just grinded once and a while.

Well, I must say it took over 2 years and almost 7 trips to my local ford dealer before they were "convinced" that there was a problem. YOU WOULD THINK THAT WORKING FOR A FORD DEALERSHIP WOULD HAVE SOME ADVANTAGES.....NOT WHEN IT COMES TO FORD AND THEIR WARRANTY......
Long story short......the technician went for a test drive and it finally made the "grinding" sound........so they fixed it.

yeah, I realy dont think this can be helped with different fluid. The problem definitely feels mechanical.
also it grinds weather the rpm is low or high, in fact it seems to be at its best behavior when im going like 50+ mph in 2nd and then shift to 3rd.
Can someone with average wrenching skills replace the syncro, or how much might it cost for a mechanic to do it?

Visit f-150 online and ask the folks there They (and myself) are waiting for something to improve shifting. I will be waiting for your responce. Thanks .
