Post Body Lift - to do one's self or not

Ok, I'm playing with the idea of putting on a 3" body lift, so my 34" stop bottoming out. I've heard alot of you guys did it your self and I'm wondering what it takes to get it done. Does anyone have the instructions in a file format for email, or something that could be posted here. I just want to get an idea if this is something I even want to attempt myself or pay the shop. Thanks guys.

Welp, never mind. I just read another post about having to do some welding for the floor 4x4 transfer. I just don't see myself doing that, nor would my neighbors or the local fire dept.

Do you have an electric transfer case switch or a manual lever on the floor? If you have the electric, there is no welding required.

It's the manual unfortunately. Otherwise, I love the manual transfer any other time!

MrScot:

I've the manual 4x4 shifter in the floor. I didn't weld the extension peice on the shifter and there's still plenty of room. It shifts the same as it did before.

There is still some welding required with the PA 3"body lift. I (unlike anyone else I guess), cut my t-case shifter and welded in the extension - back to factory height and you don't have to reach clear down to the floorboard to shift into 4WD - very important to me since I use 4WD every day. Even if you don't do the shifter extension, you still have to weld in the bed supports, unless you never plan on hauling anything heavy in your truck. I guess there are ways you could bolt them in, but welding is much simpler and much less of a hassle. I agree with everyone else that I wouldn't pay anyone to put in a body lift for me after having done mine, but you had better be sure you have plenty of time and the proper tools to do a good job. It is a very self-satisfying project once you get finished with it. Good luck, e-mail me if you have any questions or if you get stuck during the install!

I have a notorious precedent set that all jobs, big or small that I tackle, end up being alot more involved. It's Murphy's Law in motion. The truck is my daily driver, so any extra down time would be bad. (ie not having a vehicle). I'm going to do something here in the next two weeks or so, so I'll let you know. Thanks for the help guys.

Cool

MrScot,
You'll probably find that most of us didn't weld in the extension to the t-case shifter. After doing my own lift, there is no way I would pay a shop $500 for the labor. Just my opinion.

What, on average, was the total time it took to install the lift? Were people helping? I'm going to have access to a garage, all the airtools I can shake a stick at, and a welder if needed. I'm trying to get an idea of time my truck is going to be disabled, and if I should borrow a car from the fleet (my folks, of course ) I'm really wanting to do this next weekend, but a little timid about doing it myself and underestimating the project. I've got two people willing to help and one has done one body lift before on a Toy I think. Also, what brand do you guys recommend? This truck spends alot of time in the dirt and is driven hard, too hard sometimes. I need one that's solid and can perform, not just look pretty. Thanks again guys
