annoying brake clunking noises......
Yes, It's me again, There is a noise in
my suspension or brakes that has been
there for almost a year and I'm finally
completely sick of it ...ok ,here it is/Whenever I back up and put on the brakes, then pull forward and put on the brakes, there is a loud clunk in what feels
like the front right susp. area. You can
feel this through the brake pedal as well
as hear it. now I've had my front brakes
redone since then then and nothing has
changed so I'm ruling out a loose caliper.
my A-arm bushings look ok and centered in the mounts. and I don't know
what else it could be. Sounds like some
ones hit the frame with a large rubber face mallet. It never happens any other
time than the first brake application after
braking in reverse. The truck is a 98 XLT
V-8 2wd.

Actually it feels like a front suspension
problem, with all the vehicles I've owned,
25 in all, everything points to a loose a-arm mounting. but they look fine. I was
planning to redo the front and rear susp-
ension with urethane. Maybe that will take
care of it. for now I'll keep looking.

Hey, nomo
It did start along time ago, way before the
shocks, also before and after a front brake job. The brakes were done at a Ford dealer,so believe me,if anything was
wrong they would want to fix it and charge
for it . What surprises me the most is that
has been going on about 10,000 miles,
but has never worsened. It has been a
consistent noise. what it sounds and feels like is a loose a-arm bushing. When
I back up it gets pulled one way,and then
when I put on the brakes going forward,
it clunks when it goes back into place.
Does this sound right? or could it be a loose ball joint? it's making me nuts.

With the bushing size discrepency you mentioned with the rear shocks, I just wanted to be sure that a similar thing wasn't causing the noise you hear. If you're sure it is up front, then you are probably on the right path.
I have had some noises come from the rear that I could have sworn were further up front. Most specifically, my hitch will rattle and sound like it is under the cab. Like Dave said, you might go ahead and check stuff in the back too.

If I'm not mistaken, didn't Ford have a recall or something for loose or improperly torqued bolts that are used to mount the hitch.
Could it be the bushings where the rear leaf springs are atached? Or didn't someone state in an older post that they had a bolt that was missing where the transmission mounts to?
Sorry to blabble, but I remember reading some of these posts awhile back.

endless possibilities, huh ? Just put it on
a transport to New Mexico, Can't look 4 now but wish I could. I'm praying to the man upstairs that they don't scratch my
newly painted bumper,but they will.
You should've seen what these idiots did
to my 86E-150 conv. van. It slipped off the tracks and when they tried to lift it back, they tore off the left side emblem,
crushed both deezee al. running boards,
pulled the bumper out on the dr.side, cut
the side wall on the rr tire, and scratched
the front fender to boot. I travel for a living
and this is a necessary evil. this was a
really nice example with just over 40k on
it. and now I have to trust them with my
98 ext. cab. I dread the results, wish me
luck.

Did you ever get this problem fixed?
My F150 had the same noise after a brake job. I forgot to torque the two bolts on the assembly that the caliper slides on. You might give it a wrench and see? I think they took about 100/lbs to tighten.
