Question All Leather?

It's about time I did the leather in my '01. The problem is, I can't tell the difference between what's on the seating surfaces of the front seats and what's on the headrests, back and sides of the seats, and the rear bench. Everything seems to be the same stuff. Anybody know?

My '99 SC has leather only on the front seating surfaces. The rest is obviously all vinyl, including the rear. This SuperCrew Lariat has me stumped.

I'm not exactly thrilled with having to clean and condition so much leather...

Hey Dennis,

You think you got leather problems, just think about all us KR owners, we've got leather galore and of course there's the maintenance issue you're faced with now. Me, I was supposed to get a care package from Ford but somehow the dealer screwed up my paperwork for my purchase and I'm listed at Ford as the subsequent owner. Subsequent owners get nothing as gifts or information like new buyers do.

Anyway, I feel your pain but I'm not putting any leather conditioner on my seats until I know I've got the right stuff, no, not the movie! As far as the seating surfaces, I think you are right is suspecting that some parts are imitation leather but I'm like you and don't know either. I would suspect that any parts that you could come into regular contact with would be the ones that are real leather, I don't know for sure though.

Maybe that guy Showme that works at the Kansas City assembly plant can shed some light on this delima.

Good luck with all your leather conditioning chores!

From what I can tell only the seating surfaces are leather. I think the sides and backs are vinyl. That is just the way it looks to me in my Lariat. I have been treating the whole thing with Lexol. Hope that helps a little.

I have the same concerns as a 2002 Lariat Screw owner. After researching this board and others I decided on "303 Protectant".
Our leather is finished, vinyl top coat of some type and this product is safe for it. ( I hope )

External Link To 303 Info

I have already had spill's ( milk & juice) on the leather seats (Kids) and used a damp rag to clean with the 303 to follow up.

FYI

Hi Dennis:

I posted a similar question on the interior care board....you might want to check it out (link below). 98SCREAMER had a suggestion for telling the difference.

Thanks for the replies! After about an hour of looking, I found one Ford source that says all the "seating" surfaces are leather, including the rear bench. If the rest is vinyl, I'm amazed at how much it looks and feels like leather! It's almost to the point where they may as well make it all vinyl... NOT!!!!

I wish the Lariat had a cloth option. My '87 Lariat had cloth seats and I loved it. All I had to do was vacuum it. It was Scotch Guarded, so didn't have to worry much about spills, so long as I had a towel handy.

Sorry ShowYa,

I meant well when I incorrectly noted your call name as ShowMe. Anyway, I think the question in this thread is, are all the materials that make up the outer surface of the seats in the Lariat package made of leather or are possibly some of the seats back surfaces made of something else?

Hopefully I've come clean with you now ShowYa!

Just kidding here, as far as I know as of 1995 when I went to work for Ford you either got cloth or you got leather interior, as far as the front being different from the rear, I will call Lear who is the manufacturer of our seats and talk to them for you guys, I have very good connections over there also.

Hey ShowYa,

I'm talking about the back of the front seat, not the back seat. Just want to make sure you didn't get that part confused.

Happy New Year to all!

Hey Dave you must have very long arms here if you can sit in the back seat and drive..................... just kidding here.

I must admit I look at somewhere in the neighborhood of what 400 to 450 sets of seats a night at the plant during installation and final inspection. I will contact them this week and see what they say, as far as I have ever known, they were all leather to the best of my knowledge.

I do know I have grey Lariat leather seats and the driver seat has worn within 3 years and I am not very happy with that but I have 2001 Harley seats to install this spring so I am going to give this set of seats extra TLC for sure.

Have a good one DaveMan and I will C ya aka ShowYa in Kansas City, better run before my date gets here and spanks me for being online and not in the shower! hehehehehehe

Hey guys.....................got some answers here on Wednesday, yeah I know this is Friday(remember I am dealing with a wrecked truck right now) I spoke with a guy from Lear here in Kansas City where the 2002-2003 Ford SuperCrew and King Ranch are built, here is what I was told ..................

The seating surface, the front of the seats and the lower cushion surface is leather.............that is it! The sides and lower and back panels are vinyl. Other than the carpet you have that is what I was told.

I hope this clears up any issues and if you still have a question, post it here or drop me an email ashlockboo@aol.com and give me a day ro so to reply.

Happy New Year and I am outta here ShowYa

Hey Showya,

I guess your latest statement only applies to trucks other than the King Ranch which I think the seats are cowhide all over the entire seat. Am I correct on the KR seats being all leather or, don't tell me, it has vinyl parts too?

Thanks,
DaveMan

I really miss the leather in my BMW. My S'crew cost 32k over here, thats about $45.000, and we had to draw the line somewhere, so out went the lariat option and the 5.4.
When I'm in scruff order (not working) which is Levis and Rigger boots, I get zapped every time I get out. If the coils/plugs make that kind of spark, I'll be happy!

Hey Showya,

Any word from the Lear guys on caring for and conditioning our seats? You mentioned you had wear and are going to take better care of your Harley seats, care to elaborate? Thanks.....

John
