digodell,

we were in phoenix last week and couldn't believe gas prices there! you guys are paying .20 cents gallon on avg. less than we are (this week 1.90-1.95 premium)in havasu. we saw as much as .25 cents a gal difference in premium gas. im thinking that maybe next time we come to phoenix i'll bring a couple of 55 gal. drums with me!

More mileage info.

Dkolb, great choice of trucks!

KK, luckily the company pays for the gas of the SCrew and did pay for the Pathfinder. Neither of them is exactly ALGORE friendly.

Drove from Johnson City, TN to Roanoke Virginia today on business. (400 miles round trip) Took a couple of cases of supplies to a customer and made a couple of calls while there. Drove up there with the tailgate up, the return trip with it down. The supplies did not weigh much so I do not think they made much difference. The driving was purely highway miles, in fairly hilly driving. Mileage going was 17.8 mpg, return was 19.6. Sure makes the case for having the tail gate down when on the road if not hauling anything.

Hope this helps. Thanks for the comments!

Picked up truck yesterday, installed K&N air filter and drove from Austin TX to Concordia KS, and back today. Going up, I ran with the tailgate down, but was in a hurry, cruising 75-90 MPH. Coming back, I was hauling a bed full of boxes, about 800 pounds worth. Mileage as follows:

First tank: 15.6508 MPG
Second tank: 14.9819 MPG
Third tank: 17.4781 MPG
Fourth tank: 16.7046 MPG

Overall mileage: 16.1680 MPG

I will be making the same trip in two weeks, identical route, and most likely hauling similar cargo. I hope to have a Superchip installed by then, so I can provide numbers for comparison.

Awesome truck; other than a grease spot that the dealer's cleaning crew missed on the dash and a small imperfection in one tire, the truck was flawless in both appearance and function.

So far I am getting 17 MPG (50% city, 50% highway) and 15 MPG (100% city). I am hoping to get about 19-20 MPG on the highway (100%).

This is pretty good since there is not a flat piece of land in MO. Mostly drive between 35-45 mph through city with about 10 lights or stop signed in an 8 mile trip. Howeverm I do drive conservatively but I like having the power of the 5.4 incase I need to get somewhere in a hurry.

The reason why the SC get better mileage than the older 140s is because they were constructed using high strength steel and laser bonded blanks which make the trucker lighter. It is being tested on the 150s first then will be applied to the 250s and 350s. This was a move to get more gov't contracts. (According to a mag I read).

Just noted 13 MPG today; pure city driving. Have seen 15+ MPG mixed city/hwy; 16.8 MPG pure highway. Have not had a pure hwy drive with the tonneau cover - yet. Approx. 2880 total miles; 5.4L, 4x4, ltd slip, 17" tires, no other significant mods.

Hey all,

I changed my tires to 285's and added the AirForce One intake.

My mileage has dropped off significantly. I used to go about 350 (14MPG) miles ber tank, now I'm lucky to get 300 (12MPG).

I didn't think the tires would make that much difference but they did!

The tires look pretty cool though.

wingnut,
if your speedo hasn't been calibrated, you realize that your odometer would be registering less miles...contributing to the decrease in mileage, right?

Snodgrass... DOH!!! Ever have someone tell you something that is so obvious that you didn't think of it???

Guess what...I just did! As soon as I read your post I started laughing.

Thanks for the reminder. Who can set it back up, the dealer?

Hey Pilot,

I guess they did not tell you at the dealer, but it is the Red SCrew's that get the best mileage. Mine consistantly gets better than most of the ones I read on here.

Interesting about the RPMs though. I find that on flat surfaces at 70mph I am running about 1700 rpms. That seems to keep the mileage up. I find the mileage drops the most when I am doing some of the hilly driving around here and I end up with higher average rpms. My most recent trip was to Nashville and back, right after my first oil change to Mobil 1, and the mileage was consistantly between 18.6 and 19.8 mpg.

(I'm not an automotive expert, I just play one on tv)

Question

MIKEnT-
Don't know about that "Red" theory. My first tank from 8.1 to 255.8 miles = 15.01 mpg; second tank (100%hwy) 255.8 to 408.7 miles = 20.1 mpg; third tank (100%city) = 13.49mpg; not too bad in my opinion for a 5.4 in a full-size blue truck !

I just went on a long trip, from Manchester NH to Pottsville PA, and we got 20mpg on the highway. It sure surprised my wife and I. By brother has the 5.4L in his Expy, and the dealer told him, "1900-2000 rpm should give you the best range on the highway", so I tried it. With that rpm range we saw 75-80mph and got the crazy 20mpg. I think it worked. The truck now has 2500 miles on it, after the trip. I didn't think this truck could get that type of mpg. I ran 87 octane the whole trip.

Hope this helps,
