Blue,

There is no true "Factory" alarm on the vehicle other that the panic button which when pushed honks the horn. You can open the doors all day and nothing will go off.

The P.A.T.S.(Passive Anti-Theft System) on the other hand protects the vehicle from being started without the factory chipped key. Without a proper transistor chip in the key, the vehicle will not let the starter engage even if the steering column was broken. Basically the truck has to be flatbedded to be stolen unless the culprit gets access to a key made for your truck. This would be due to a mechanic or parking valet making a copy of your keys and programming the new key to your truck. On the other hand, supposedly this can't be done on the newer trucks anymore due to the 2 original key fobs needing to be present to program another.

$300.00 is a lot of cash to lay out for an alarm in most areas, Oregon included. You can add a basic Chapman or Code-Alarm system to the truck that'll work with the factory key fobs for around $150.00. This adds door protection and shock sensors along with a truely annoying sounding alarm speaker. You can spend another $100.00 for a Viper or Excalibur system or similar which adds additional features to the alarm system and uses it's own remotes which have a longer range than the Ford remotes.

I opted for the Excalibur because of various owner programmable options that can be changed on a whim. It was $250.00 locally, installed including tax.

Excalibur is made by Omega Research www.caralarm.com

Chapman and Code Alarm can be located at www.codl.com

I would recommend either of the brands. I've used all three brands over the years and a few trucks now and have found all to be reliable in my experience.

Happy Alarm Shopping,

TL

Question Factory Alarm System

What is the deal with the factory alarm system??? I have heard conflicting stories over what it actually does. I have been told it will only activate when someone try's to start the car when it's armed. I have also been told it will go off when you open the doors but I know that's not true because I have opened the doors with the alarm active and it didn't do anything. Is it wourth it to spend $300 on a good aftermarket alarm system?????
