3.55 vs. 3.73

I am getting ready to buy a 2006 F-150 super crew 5.4v8, 2 wheel drive and was wondering to get 3.55 or 3.73 axle ratio. I will be wanting to pull a few things down the road like a camper trailer (20-29ft.), boat, motorcylces, etc... I live in an area that I would be wanting to go to the mountains, so there would be some uphill driving at times. Is there much difference between 3.55 and 3.73? It seems the dealers aren't to keen on this type of thing, and they try to sell what they have, not always what you need. Please help.

Thanks and God Bless!
Sincerely,
Y.B.I.C.
Bill

I always buy the shortest (highest number) gear availible. 1 mpg (maybe) isn't worth the performance benefit IMO. However, 5% difference isn't that much. What's more importnant to me would be limited slip. I'd take 3.55LS over 3.73 open, but I'll take 3.73Ls over anything else.

I agree with APT.
You didn't ask about the Limited Slip option but, that is the more important option in these trucks.
As far as the gearing, 3.73. Help yourself as much as you can, Bill.

(Remember, somewhere there's a Arab that's hoping you'll get the 3.55)

Still waiting for the F-150 with 3.73 axcle. Should be in Thurs. June 1.
Anyone opt for the extended warranty offered by the Ford deallers? I know it comes covered from head to toes for 3yrs, but Ford wants to offer the extended head to toes 7yrs warranty for additional cash.

see reply in your other post I think it is a good idea....kinda like life insurance sucks to pay for it but if you need it pays for itself.

Get quotes online for the same Ford ESP to compare your dealer prices. www.fordesp.com usually has good prices.

You have 12mo/12k miles to get the same warranty at the same cost or 36mo/36k miles to get the saem warranty with an extra $100 fee. Unless the loca ldealer is offering a very good price, I would make the ESP decision until after you get to know your truck.
