Proper amount of oil for a 4.6?

I recently p[urchased a 2003 F150 Supercrew with the 4.6 liter V8...
I took it to a Jiffylube type place and the guy insisted that in needed 7 quarts of oil with the filter change even though the manual states 6 quarts with the filter...
I checked the oil level and it does not seem to be overfull...
any thoughts? thanks....I think I will do it myself next time ...

I am pretty sure it takes 6 qts. My 2005 5.4 takes 7, and you have to watch them, even the dealer will sometimes only put in 6.

I am begining to wonder if they just were rippin me off or an extra quart of oil....he showed me 7 empty quarts but that does not mean they actually put 7 quarts in...
It seems that Ford would better know the correct oil capacity then a Jiffylube.....
That is like a pretty low way to make a few extra bucks
I wont go back to that shop again and will change it myself next time so I know for sure what it takes..

If it does not show overfull, yep, probably just ripped you off for a quart.

It is definetly not overfull
What a great way to build up repeat business heh?...
I will change it myself next time and if it only takes 6 quarts
I intend to report this shop to the BBB and the national headquarters as it is a franchise...
Some folks have no business sense at all...

Very short sighted and stupid. Only other possibility was that mabee it was an employee trying to get a free quart for himself.

For however much oil it will take to fill the oil pan, if you change the oil filter that will take some additional oil (maybe 1/2 quart or so), and might not be counted in whatever amount of oil the pan is supposed to hold.

6 quarts is what i put in each time. First time i bought 5, then found out it needed 6 (owners manual) , so went back to get two more, (I stored one behind the seat for the Just In Case days)

In all probablility they did put in at least part of the seventh quart. It is true that all Ford literature indicates 6 quart capacity for the 4.6 (and the 5.4 I think). However in nearly every case 6 qts will not bring it to the "full" mark on the dipstick. From what I have read on the subject here on the boards, 6 qts will show anywhere from 1/3 to 2/3 of the distance on the dipstick between the "full" and the "add oil" marks. Just depends on the individual truck.

Also from what I have read, some folks pour in the 6 qts and call it good, and others put in a little bit more, say 6.5 qts. (I am one of the 6.5 qts people). A few folks put in seven full qts, and as long as it does not show over "full" they should be OK.

As long as the level is between "full" and "add oil" we should all be Ok.
