Strange noise
I remember I was going like 35mph threw a neighborhood and then I slowed for the stop sign and I heard the loudest grind come from under the bed when i heard it i immediatly stomped on the brake and said "what the ******* was that???" I had no idea where it came from I haven't heard it since, its been like 6 month since i've heard it though. My advice is replace your rotors, but a loud grind sound i dont kknow it could have something to do with the bearings.
i think this is a common problem check out this post

Ive got the same problem and thats why I am here ... lol
I was hoping to run across a thread of this nature. I have a 2002 Fx4 F140 5.4 V8 with approx 63,000 miles on it and I am having the same noise from what appears to be the front drivers side. It may possibly be throwing the sound from somewhere else on the truck but when it is on a rack you cannot hear the noise its almost like the weight of the truck has to be on the tires. It started off that we knocker all the dirt and rust from the rotors. Still didnt help. Next we changed the pads on the truck , there was a lil less than half pad left but we changed them anyway. We replaced them with lifetime pads still no luck, next was (well it is making a noise at a certain spot everytime the wheel rolled in a certain spot) so we changed out the rotars because I was told maybe the rotars where warped. Then came the sanding down of the rotars in spots were rust was built up. Then I was told that a mechanic had worked on a truck with that similar problem and the pads werent shifting correctly and they "grinded" some of the pad out. But I knew that wouldnt fix it because it was doing it before this new set of pads and the noise stays there when the brake is applied. Next came the almighty wheel bearing $320 for parts and labor but I got lucky and that was not the problem either because it still made the noise after the new bearing was put on so they took the new one off and put the old one back on and didnt charge me for anything but I would have gladly paid the 320 if it would have taken care of the aggravating noise. The "noise" originally started at around 45 miles per hour and slowed down with the speed of the truck almost like it is "catching" in one certain spot . Now it is also heard when driving at a slow speed and is extremely irritating . I have had it at 2 different shops and with no luck the noise is still there, I am gonna try and take it to a ford dealer once I get some extra cash but for now any advice would be greatly appreciated. I can only describe it as a whistly type rubbing or catching noise with the rotation of a tire . It sounds like the front drivers side but I have been told that noises like that can be "thrown" from another tire for example I do not have much knowledge at all about vehicles but im not totally ignorant to things either but this is mind boggling . I love my ford and I dont want to burn it but the noise makes me want to !!! lol PLEASE HELP !!!
it seems we are all having the same issues.. i have taken my truck to the same shop three times and they dont hear or feel anything. i have changed the brakes all the way around, i rotated and balanced the tires.. i replaced a bad wheel bearing.. i've had my wife yelling at me cause i'm spending money and it's not solving this problem that she claims is not there! someone has to know what is wrong and how it can be fixed. i'm afraid to take my truck on long trips, and summer is coming up and we have alot of plans in order. i'm hoping whatever is wrong that it will just brake already that way i can get it fixed!
haha
I was just sitting around thinking I wonder if I am the only one guess what I am not. Just got an 02 and with my dual exhaust and tires I love to drive with the windows down and this noise is so irritating I can't. I would almost describe it as you know the noise a metal chain makes when you shake it ***** ***** that kind of noise, never gets louder never goes away.
Maybe we should start our own website wierdfordnoise.com we would have a lot of members. Anyone figures this out let me know.

Add another to the list. I've got a 2001 with 65,000 miles. The sound it makes is a dull sound in sync with the tires. It seems to be coming from the front right, and disappears only when turning left. Brakes do not affect it. It starts at 20 mph or so, gets worse up to 50, then the wind noise cancels it out. It sounds like someone saying "wom-wom-wom-wom" faster or slower depending on speed. I was convinced it was a wheel bearing until i just looked on here and saw that wheel bearings hadn't fixed this for many
for memorial weekend i am loading up the truck with camping gear and the family, i'll let you guys know if i break down. i kind of hope something finally goes, i want this noise fixed! it will be a three hour trip..........
check out this thread could it be the same thing? maybe the sway bar bushings?

yeah mine has to be something in the suspension it is all the time now especially with bumps and brakes don't effect it. Glad I bought the extended warranty. problem is I am using my truck for work so I can't drop it off to get it checked out anytime soon.
I also upgraded my tires and it was doing this before I did that but the dealership better not try and say the bigger tires did it.

Has anyone figured this out yet !!!!!!
I gave up until I saved up some cash to get some other things looked at but the noise is driving me crazy !!!!! If anyone finds anything out please post this !!! And let me know if that website mentioned above exists because I want to join !!! lol
As the starter of this thread, I'm glad I'm not alone in my misery, but the number of us having the same issue disturbs me (not enough to buy a Chevy Mudslide, but it bothers me enough).
I did turn my rotors as others have done and replaced the front pads and still have the noise.
I guess we can all agree that the cause of the noise is NOT:
Brakes (pads or rotors) - several of us replaced with no fix
Tires - also done by a few of us with no fix
Wheel bearings - thanks to Jay for risking that repair bill to find that is not a fix!
Alignment related - I tried this too, no fix
The noise itself IS:
Drivers front side
Keeps pace with speed as if it is something rotating
Soft whomp-whomp or wom-wom, not a clunk or hard metal to metal.
I don't know enough about front ends to offer up any other possible sources of the sound.
Have I missed anything else we tried? What is left?
Jim (trying to be optimistic)

I've had similar noises from the front wheels (left and right side). After replacing the rotors because of a clip out of one the noise became louder on the right side. Seems the dust shield was slightly touching the right rotor. Not all the time, just when I made quick lefts and at certain speeds the two rubbed to make a loud metal on metal sound. It didn't make the noise when I took off the wheel and spun the rotor. A quick bend and that noise went away. The left side had the sliding portion of the caliper touching the rotor. Appears the rear slide bar on the caliper was bent just enough that sometimes after releasing the brakes, the rear edge of the caliper was slow to pull away from the rotor and the edge would ever so slightly touch. Was able to get a new slide pin. Both noises are gone.
