noise from front end
noise from front end
I just bought a 01 supercrew which I love the only thing I notice is when I go over a sharp bump in the road the front end sounds like somthing is lose. Kind of like the sound reverberates almost a springy sound. steering is fine and it doesnt seem to affect the handling I'm not sure if this is a common noise with these trucks or not or if somthing is wrong.
its at any speed it feels like two pieces of metal that are not bolted together tight. But its only over sharp bumps like buckled pavement or small pot holes. Kind of a rattle like somthing is lose.
Might be your pitman arm going, usually on the right side of the truck and doesn't get greased b/c it under a skid plate. if thats it then get a Moog brand ( prolly looking neighborhood of $75 for the part, 1/2 labor and an alignment )and make sure you grease it. I replaced one on my 2001 Screw nad that solved my issue, it kinda creaked, popped ,groaned when i would hit RR tracks or go down a drive or over a curb.

You're not alone.
My 01 Screw has the same sound.
Mine does it easiest with a left turn, off center, over broken pavement.
I checked around again last week and found out that my steering shaft under the rubber boot moves side to side and makes the noise. Halfway between the firewall and the steering box is where the shafts slide together.
I have posted in suspension asking about a cure, but last time I checked, no responses on steering shaft repair. I believe I did a decent search and still found no definite answer. Good luck and please post if you find a cure.

My '01 SCrew has 2 clunks.
1. Is from the clunk washer fix. This is where the lower a frame is mounted.
I know JDM has something for it, but there might be another way of curing it also:

I notice it most when turning the wheel while standing still, and most of the time to the left. It almost sounds like a coil spring clunking. I have yet to do something about it. If you look at the lower A frame driver's side, you will see the marks from where it moves. I only noticed this after going to 285/60R18s, with the narrower stock tire, I did not have it. Do you have a wider tire installed ?
This is what it looks like :

If you search on clunk washer you will get a bunch of posts on the topic, mostly lightnings.
2. My Bed has a rubber pad that pops out sometimes. This is in the front of the bed, seems to only be the pass side. If you look up under the bed, in front of the rear tire, you will see some rubber pads, one might be turned out. Just need to loosen it a bit, take a pry bar to make some room, and push it back in and tighten it back down. Trying to find the thread and pics on this.
Just 2 thoughts of what might be the cause, aside from the needing new cam bolts, and an alighnment, or the likes.
Good Luck

I have 315 on the stock 17 in wheels. They are to big in my opinion for the wheels 7.5 in wide but I bought it that way I'm in the process of get 17x10 and I will swap them out. Thanks for the info I will let you guys know as soon as I find out. I don't think I have the noise you have though it only does it over sharp bumps like potholes and uneven pavement not when I turn or go over softer bumps. As a matter of fact I can hit a dip and totally compress the suspension and no noise. Its just like if you have a box of bolts, up and down soft no sound, jar the box and you here there loose. Hope that makes sense.

I never asked if it was a 4x4 or 4x2. Your profile did not say, but by the tire selection, I would say 4x4.
If I got that correct, never mind on my posting to the thread, that is all 4x2 info.

Most straight hits do not make mine rattle.
The slight turns w/ light strng wheel pressure at lower speeds,10-30mph, seem to do it most. Remember, I did not find mine loose 'til I checked it one day w/ the wheel turned a bit. If I keep or increase whl pressure over the bumps, it is not as loud. If I release the whl, which allows slack in the shaft(hate when that happens), it rattles louder. If I could get someone to ride under the hood, we may verify it quicker.
I though about a few zip ties around the boot to help hold it together tighter for a short test drive may help to prove it.
Good luck & keep us posted on what you find.

Ok took it back to Magarino ford they said it was the lower ball joints they replaced them it would have cost 615.00 but they covered it since it was purchased only 2 weeks ago and the service writer said this should have been caught at the inspection. Did I forget to mention this is a fantastic dealership when you have to deal with the service dept. So I pick up the truck all smiles till I drive down the road guess what still makes the sound and feels no diffrent so its going back tommorrow. Hey atleast they caught the ball joint poblem saved me from having to do it so

And yes its a 4x4 off road package.

Mine is doing this too, but only on the really big stuff like speed bumps.
A friend of mine had his get so bad he couldn't stand it so he took it to the dealer and got new ones - $700.
Some of the guys on this forum have replaced their own and went with the aftermarket units with zerks so that they will never have a repeat of the problem. The cost is actually cheaper than the dealer, but I don't recall specifics. Perhaps someone who has already had this done can chime in with some more info.
