Why Ford did not build a bigger manual for our V-8s, I will never know.
They did - it's called a ZF. Won't fit in the F-150 tunnel without a body lift or modding the tunnel but you aren't going to blow one of those up.

There's a thread here somewhere about a guy who did do a ZF conversion in an Expy.

Neither of those are my threads - all I did was find them for you!

No problem - I just don't want to take credit for something that I didn't do!

Looks like spolcyn did the ZF5 into an Expy and five0merc is the one who tried to do a ZF6 in a F-150.

Note that the ZF5 is really just a 4 speed, because 1st is a granny. The ZF6 is a 5 speed with granny 1st. They are also long throw truck trannys that can't be shifted very quickly, perhaps JMC's idea of a beefed T56 would be a better option for the track.

I toyed for years with the idea of a ZF swap but I never had the cash handy when my M5OD would go kaput. I drove a diesel with one and it shifted just fine. Then again I was towing with the diesel and would not rev higher than 2200 so I am afraid that at 6g it will be quite the task to row through the gears. When a friend put me on to these guys with either a built T56 or a 6060 I gave up on the ZF. And these transmissions will still require some fab and modifications to make them work. The tale stock has to be drilled to the t-case bolt pattern. There is no bungs on the side of the transmission case to mount the T-case shift lever. You have regear your diff because first gear is too high. I believe the lowest you can go is 2.90:1. With stock 3.55 gears in the diff it will be a dog off the line. And just so everybody knows my truck started life as a 4.6 with an M5OD. I had to order it from the Dealer.

I tried like HELL to get the 5.4 5-speed in a REG CAB! No luck!
The M5OD was never offered with a 5.4 in ANY F-150 or with any engine in the Screw, and neither was the ZF. The M5OD was only offered with the 300 I6 and 302 (pre-97) and with the 4.2 from 97-08 and 4.6 from 97-03.
