WHAT COPS & PLUGS for SC'd

Ok I've got a misfire in cylinder 4 (PO304). Figuring its the AutoLite HTO's giving up on me. Kind of a shame considering they have only 17k boosted miles on them. But it could just be a bad COP. I will it ohm it out Friday night to see. In the meantime what are guys having success with?

Heres what Sean Hyland says in his book 4.6/5.4 Liter How to build max performance

"The preferred plug for most performance applications is the NGK Tr6 copper-core plug.
I recommend the gap be set at .035 for NA engines and .030 for FI. The small gain in power from a larger gap is more then offset by the very real possibilty of misfires with high cylinders pressures."

He goes on to say change these plugs out every 12K miles. It sounds like a lot of over kill to me but thats what it says.

The heat range should be one step colder for ever 6-8 lbs of boost added, or every 50Hp shot of N2O.

He recomends the AL HT or Ford racing plug for the 3Valve and says to close the gap with his special tool to .030

I know your plugs are diffrent looking then the 2 valve's he talks about but Im sure there a simmiler Ngk application for the 3 valve.

Good info. Thanks for posting that. Maybe 17k was good. I know oil changes are every 2500-3000 using fully syn and of course a fuel filter every 10k.

Have you swaped the coil around to see if its a plug or COP? My HTO's didn't last but 6 months I run the Brisk plug they seem to last about a year. Do you have stock or aftermarket COP's?

I've ran HTO's for 30k+ miles with my vortech unit...

Just about every tuner except Troyer says use HTO....

Then of course factory COPS.

.030 is way to tight a gap for the low boost levels we are pushing... more like .034 or .032.

Oil changes every 2500/3000? I go at minimum 5,000 between filter changes and 10k on oil changes...

I'm running stock cops. My hto's are gapped at .32. As for the oil changes I went with FatherFords schedule when I was na. Troyers advise was to change it that frequently. I'm guessing this is a plug issue. I have an extra HTO so I'll probably drop it in just to see. Ohm the coil and move it to just to see what happens.

Guess I could send my oil off to get checked and see if I should be changing it more or longer...

but it's synthetic oil. It's designed for 5000+ mile usage. Hell with a good bypass oil filter setup one could probably get 100k miles out of synthetic.

I change mine every 5k and fuel filter whenever I remember to do so and a trans service once a year but I only drive like 6-8k a year if even. HTO is what I currently have, but next I'm using Brisk Racing plugs for 10PSI. Ive heard both are about the best to have. I never have heard anything good about aftermarket COPs. Alot of good reviews and alot of bad reviews more bad then good.

I am running HT0's gapped at .032. I was running Brisk racing plugs but after having to replace them 3 times in a year and the last set 5 of 8 plugs had a blowby issue that wasnt covered under warranty I went back to HT0's because at 15 bucks a pop it was getting to be stupid throwing away money.

I purchased and ran the Granetelli COP's Because the is what Troyer recommended. I had 3 fail in the first year, they were replaced but I had a couple more fail out of warranty. I am using the stock coils but using the solid plug wire from the granetelli's. I would just buy the coil wire upgrade if it is still available.

I have been running motorcraft 5-20 oil and motorcraft filter since day one and change it every 5K miles and I change out the fuel filter every 10K

I've got almost 15,000 miles on my Brisk plugs, but they are the new style plugs for the revised 3v heads.

I just ordered a set of the granatelli wire upgrades, just under $100.00 and will be replacing my brisks with the autolite HT0s.

Curious about the upgrade. I'm assuming it repalces the spring inside the stock coils? Benifits to doing this? Sorry this is an upgrade I've never even heard of. Batn68 where did you order them from?

Its an upgrade for that spring, I got them from lightning force performance (ebay store, free shipping), under the 2005-2010 mustang GT ignition page.
