You will be hard pressed to find anyone that sees anywhere near half "rms" power during normal listening. What you worry about with "headroom" is the crest factor of a song. NPDANG gives a good reasoning, and explanation here: http://www.diymobileaudio.com/forum/...wer-usage.html

with some good info in the following discussion.

Dont know where I will put the full range drivers, or how much I want to modify the sail pannels. Going to have to work on this.
I understand the crest factor, it's that particular concept that I tune my installs with Madonna or Michael Jackson songs. Plenty of volume variation and frequency variation. And I apologize if I came on acusing you of thinking I'm an idiot, I simply asked a simple question of what kind of mids can handle 250Wrms and I got every form of answer that did not pertain to the question. I understand that ratings are irrelevant, but only to a certain degree. If you have a speaker that can only handle 50 watts continuous and your amplifier puts out 300 watts continuous and you listen to, let's say hard rap music, with your mids in the doors IB, gain tuned to the voltage of the amp, HP @ 120hz, your speakers will be blown.

This happened with a pair of JL ZR 6.5" components I ripped out of a 2005 Mini Cooper S. Owner complained the car sounded crappy, doors sounded crappy at high levels, then the doors went out. I riped everything out, midwoofers were blown in the door. No continuity at all. Alpine PDX 4.150 amp with the gain set to the headunit, and since she listens to her music at a deafening level, the drivers blew the VC's.

That was the only point of my question. There is an extent at which a speaker's rating is important. That's the only reason why I asked what kind of midrange speakers could handle 250Wrms, because there are some cases where a speaker WILL get more power than it can handle, even with proper tuning.

I need some wiring help. I wired everything up tonight to test it out. Everything worked fine and I got all the settings on the HU and amp how I wanted them then went to mount the amp behind the seat. This meant taking the wires off the amp then putting them back on in the exact same locations, but after I did this the sub is making no sound. The amp has power, the signal wire has power, the speaker wires going to the sub are getting about .18V (is this normal?) I tried jumping different RCAs from the HU to the amp just to make sure it wasnt the RCAs which it isnt. All the fuses are good. What could be the problem?

I am thinking the problem is the 0.18v output from the amp to the sub, but not sure if that is actually a problem or what could cause that.

Yes, that's what I meant by the signal wire.

What voltage should I see coming out of the sub RCA cables from my HU? I have rear speaker rcas from my hu also that are not used and I can change them to sub outputs if I want. The manual says that if I do this no amp is needed. Can I do that and still plug them into the amp or would that not work/fry things?

you typically need 5-12 volts dc to trigger the amplifier.
If your remote output on your hu is bad then simply swap it over to the ignition/accessory wire of your harness(red wire) and it will come on and off with the ignition.

the remote output is fine (~12V). What output should I see from the RCAs coming off the HU? I dont know how these would have gone bad since the rest of the HU seems fine and they were working fine when first hooked up. This is really the only thing that could be wrong as I have confirmed that everything else is working as it should.

OK, so I'm an idiot. The plug with all the RCAs came unplugged from the back of the HU. Plugged it in and everything works fine just like it did before I moved the amp. Thanks for the help anyways guys.
