How to run new speaker wire on an '06

How do I run new speaker wire in the front door? This clip on the truck inside the door opening is almost impossible to do anything with. I played around with it and the light grey part on the top of it comes down, but I can't really get the plastic piece off so I can put new wire through it. Here's three pictures so you can see what I'm talking about. The third one is zoomed in on the clip all the way. Any ideas from somebody that is familiar with the 2006 or any other year that has this kind of clip. Thanks!

Anybody have any experience with this? I'm sure the 2005's were exactly the same as these. I've messed with it some more today, I just can't figure out how that thing comes out and I don't want to get really aggressive with it.

You have to take out that plug/harness and see what pins are not being used. Then carefully drill holes in that area to run the speaker wire.

This is what I did.

The way it comes out...pull down the handle and it slides out. The handle locks it in place.

That's interesting... and unfortunate... my '04 just has the accordian boot, and wires running thru it. I was able to get twisted pair speaker wire through mine (it's equivalent to 4ga wire) with very little effort (ok that may be a bit of an exaggeration).

Oh crap, I knew that you knew because you have one of the most advanced systems in here, but seriously. You have to drill in this area? There's no way to just get that piece out and run a 16 gauge wire though that black rubber piece. The back doors are a breeze, I really want to stay away from the drill. If it comes to that then that is what I'll do I guess, but is there any other way to get the d@mn wire through there? I know it's a lot to ask, but a picture would be the ****!!

You can get the speaker wire adapters from Crutchfield...but you will have to tap into the wires somewhere. Plus, who wants to use the stock speaker wire???

If you try to squeeze wire around/through the plug without drilling, you can pinch or cut the wire and then have the possibilty of some major problems with shorting. If you are careful, the drilling is easy.

Sorry about no pics...I'm bad about not taking pics when I install...I get too wrapped up in what I'm doing and forget to take the time for pics.

Exactly, I don't want to use the crappy stock speaker wire for much nicer speakers. I guess that drilling is the way that I'll have to go, but I'm still not 100% sure exactly what spot I need to drill. I'm just going to have to experiment before I actually get the drill out. Thanks for your help!

That's exactly how my 06 is. I never had to do any drilling either.

Oh man, that's really weird. I wonder why some of them have this plastic piece and some don't. I've messed with that thing for the last hour and still don't really see where I'm suppossed to drill. I feel like ripping the d@mn thing off. The passenger side has this piece too so I guess I'm double screwed...

Have you unplugged one yet? After you do...look at the inside (on both plugs) and you can see which pins inside are not being used. That's were you drill. IIRC, on the driver's side, it's the bottom left corner and the bottom half on the passenger side...but don't hold me to that. As you can see, all the trucks are different.

On the driver's side you have to take off the emergency brake assymbly to get the inside plug off and be able to drill. They aren't easy getting back together either.

No, I haven't gotten one of those things off yet, but I understand what you're talking about. So it's a b1tch to get the brake assembly back together? It seems like it would be a pain in the *** just to take it apart. I can't believe that it's that much of a pain in the @ss just to run new wire in the front doors. It must be done though because the stock is just crap. Thanks for your help. I'm going to give it a go....

Ok, I finally got it out and now I see what you're talking about as far as where I should be drilling. Why did they have to do it like that anyway, it really makes this a pain in the ****. I'll take a picture in the morning and put it on here.

I don't understand why they would be different on some trucks. Thought I was beginning to lose my mind but I know I didn't have to drill any holes. Just went outside & took these pics of the left & right door. It is an 06, a dirty 06 right now. Time for a good washing & cleaning my next day off.

This is a mystery to me.

Ok, I took it out and took some pictures of it. How can you tell which pin is used and which isn't? They all look the same and how safe is it to just drill into this thing? D@mn, this is not what I was expecting when I decided to run new speaker wire in the doors, but I'm gonna do it no matter what. Thanks again for all of your help, I'd be lost without these boards!
