Question Building New sub box

Hey Guys,

I need some help with my new sub box. I have a 02 Hd with the rear console removed. I have the design of the box down, heck I already have the materials. I need some help figuring out the air space inside the box.

I'm using 3/4" Medium Density Fiber board.
Demensions
27" long
18"tall
15"wide

I need at least 2.25 cubic feet. The boxes lid (looking for the stock look) Curves up. The lid is 18"long.

This is all that I can Think of. Thank you for any help you can provide.

Cool

Looking at your drawing, I make the following assumptions:

You are going to use 45 degree cuts, so the internal dimensions will be 25.5 x 16.5 x 13.5 inches.

The basic shape of your box is a rectangle, right up to the point where the lid ends, which you say is 18 inches. If you place an internal barrier (vertically) 18 inches from the rear of the box, you would end up with approximately 4010 cubic inches of volume (18 x 16.5 x 13.5)

Divide that by 1728 (1 cubic foot) and you get 2.32 cubic feet of volume. Subtract whatever the volume that is used by the sub itself, plus any bracing and / or dampening material, and you should get reasonably close to your target volume.

Of course, if you want to be fancy, you can make the sub enclosure longer and lower. Then you could put a tray under the armrest / lid , line it with some close cell foam, and it would be functional as storage / drink holders / etc.

Be sure to glue and silicone seal every joint in the box. If you have it, line the inside with RAAMmat or Dynamat. Also, be sure to use some gasket material between the sub and the enclosure.

Hope this helps...

Good luck and let us know how she sounds !!!

Question

Hey crockett59-

Why do you think the box will be too small ?

What kind of sub are you going to use ?

Doing some quick math with the sizes on your drawing and some guesstimations, I'd say you could get a maximum size of around 3 cubic feet. That's not enough ??

I've got 2 10's in an enclosure with less volume than what you are proposing, and they crank !!

Just wondering...

Cool

crockett59 -

I see in the specs you posted that the enclosure can be in a ported box or a sealed box.

Which one you pick will depend on your musical taste. If you like really loud, booming bass, a ported enclosure is the way to go.

If you like tight, controlled bass (which can be loud as well) a sealed enclosure will do a better job of delivering that kind of sound.

If you are going to use the sealed enclosure, you will simply have to make the internal box dimensions equal to 1728 cubic inches (1 cubic foot). Don't forget to add space to make up for the room used by the sub itself. Judging by the pic, that could be a lot !!

If you are going with the vented enclosure, you will need to get a vent port sized properly for the enclosure. Does the web site for the sub have any design assistance available ? I'm sure we can figure it out, if you are still interested...

Who makes that monster anyway? Looks big time heavy duty!!

I'm sending this to your e-mail as well...

Crockett:
Why don't you just make it a sealed enclosure for say 1.5 cubic ft.(includes sub for a total of 1 cu. ft actual)? And the extra air space you have left, make a board run the length of the box (like a lid or floor inside the box) and this will be your new rear center console, but only say 6" deep or so.

To me a sealed enclosure sounds much better, but its just my opinion. But basically lower the sub in the pic and make a lower ceiling inside the box, therefore making less cubic ft inside box and creating more room above the box for a center console. Understand? I hope that wasn't too confusing.

I had this sub in a sealed box......IT SUCKED. In a ported box with the correct air space and the correct port size, this sub out proforms most 2 sub setups.

But then again If you take a crap sub and put it in a great box it will sound great!!! If you take the best sub and put it in the wrong box it sounds like crap.

I want to make this new box look like it belongs in the truck, and still have the air space to make it ported.

If this thing comes out like I hope it does, I will be one sweet setup. Besides when I had that sub in a sealed box, I turned up the juice a little TOO MUCH and the box started leaking around the edges. I sealed I GOOD TOO!!!
