My New 1990 F150 4x2 4.9 5speed
Well here ya go. My new 90! It's kinda fitting that my red truck was a 90 and the new one is a 90. As you can see she is a little rough. The driver door is dented and there is a little rust over the rear wheels and some surface rust. It also has goofy big marker lights along the rockers. Don't worry they are the first things to go. The odo reader 48xxx. It's at least 148k but im willing to bet its more like 248k. She is all bottom end, runs out of breath quick. I figure that's the nature of the 4.9. Trans shifts extremely well and the clutch feels great. OTOH, the brakes are a tad squishy. The axle code is 19, if I remember that was 3.08 or 3.55. I'm sure someone will let me know.
So am I crazy to think I can make this thing look and run good?

Yeah it was. But the heart of that truck will eventually end up in the new one. That why I kept her. There is way to many useable parts on that truck to just junk it. Know what I mean? Btw I think I need to update my Sig. Lol

No, i don't think I'm going to paint it red. With the destruction of several schools here in Joplin, I think I will try to incorporate Joplin school colors on the truck. They're Cardinal red, white, and Navy. I have also thought about having the Joplin Eagles logo put on it as well.
It's gonna take some time to figure out how to make the colors work on the truck but I'm sure my imagination will come up with something.
Edit: axel code 19 is open 3.55. That explains why its good to 15 mph in first.
Also I noticed there isn't a trip meter on the gauge cluster. Was that an XLT and up option only?

Nice looking project. Any parts specific to these years you wanna get rid of I am willing to take off your hands haha.
I have the same exact set up and yeah it feels real quick until you hit about 50 and then it just hits a brick wall.
You'll find out after driving it that you will need to downshift further than comfortable and run the rpms higher than comfortable to run hills with any speed or to pass or merge and whatnot.
But I'm getting like 17mpg in town
Good luck with the build dudeman.

Even running a tad rough and needing a tune up. I did about 80 miles on a 1/4 tank (front) without running out. It was mostly highway.
If I do the sixlitre tune up on the 4.9, will I follow exactly the same specs as the 5.0? Mainly the plug gap and timing advance is my concern. Also will my coil and MAP sensor from the 5.0 work on the 4.9? Just trying to save a buck or two.
So far I've given it an oil change, cleaned the IAC, and wiped down the motor the best I could to detect leaks. So far I think it needs valve cover, oil pan, rear main, and side cover gaskets. Not to mention the exhaust donuts gaskets as well.
For never owning, or driving a 4.9, I'm pretty impressed with the low end grunt it has. But rather taken back about how noisy they are. The cam is gear driven, correct? Definatly a beast. It sounds and feels like I'm driving an old school bus or something.

I really want to drive a 302 truck around this year, I know the inline is noisy as hell and actually reminds me of the gear whine from a big rig. But I've never driven one with a 302 and last time I drove my dads with a 351 was like 8 years ago so I don't remember.
Oh and the timing bump will work the same way, but I do not know if you can use the coil from the 302, I don't see why not, it doesn't know how many cylinders are there. Compare parts numbers?
As soon as I get paid this friday I'm ordering a streetfire coil and new wires to do the bump too.

I stopped by autozone the other day for a can if carb cleaner and priced the Street Fire at $52 and change. Of course they had to order it and they're not cool enough to carry 9mm Ford Racing wires. They like to push Accel products way too much. I'm going to O'Rielly's after work to see if they have everything I need.
