The 5.0's are very obviously square when you see them, and the 5.8ls are very obviously rounded. look at the internal ports (I know you can't see them when it's on the engine, but the metal is round or square:


WHen you see the engine it's just as obvious as it is in that picture.

Try this picture, if you can't tell those are round then yea...


PS, my truck has seen mud just not that mcuh, I just work on it a lot and keep it as clean as possible...it's actually the dirtiest I've seen it in awhile right now. Thanks for the compliment!

I found a couple 5.0's for good prices so I think I will settle then one day maybe swap in a 351, I would really like to do a cummins 4bt swap but I think the costs are just to unrealistic for me

 

A 302 to 351 swap would not be very hard at all.
But if this is a beater truck, and you are swappng motors, go big or go home haha, 390-460 big.

 

Problem with that is you will most likely end up swapping trannies too. The 302 and 351 trannies are the same bolt pattern.

Now im just seraching for the right trucks all over again reconsidering all 3 engines, I passed up quiet a few 5.0's when I was strictly searching for 351's. hard to find anything besidesd regular cab long beds when you want to go cheap lol, but slowly finding some ext cab short beds

 

I actually like the long bed look once its lifted , but most of them are 4.9 5 speeds with 2 wheel drive which is far from what im looking for, hopefully ill have pics on here soon of a truck I get

Id love to do a 460 swap, god the f150 would fly, im sure its much more difficult and expensive compared to the 351 though

found myself a nice project truck

1989 f150 ext cab short bed
302 with some mods (cam shaft and some other stuff youd do if it were a mustang)
4" sky jacker lift 3 inch body
dana 60 in back
st8 44 up front
needs to be regeared and needs new tires because the guy is running 35's in front 38's in back says he doesn't use 4 wheel drive much and truck doesn't move much

one of the lifters is sticking a bit also

going to take a look this weekend hopefully I like what I see

as for the different tires in front and rear, is there any harm that can be done with that in 4 wheel drive? I wouldn't use it till I had 35's all around but this was the guys woods truck so from time to time it seen 4 wheel drive on soft ground and mud

Try putting some Rislone in with tht e oil and doing a flush before the next change (instructions for the flush are on the back of the bottle). See if that helps the noise. If not, take an extension, section of hose, or a sethescope (best) and hold it to different parts of the mtoor while it's running to see if you can track down where it's coming from. Might not be a lifter.

Not sure on the different sized tires, but I can see the transfer case being pretty pissed off about it, sinec the fronts are spinning faster than the backs. This would be only in 4x4 of course. Hell, if it goes out, then you have an excuse to put a better transfer case in there.

 

I called a friend who is a mechanic and asked if the transfer case might be beat to crap from it he said It shold be fine since its in the mud ant ways and your absolutley right, I plan on doing that engine swap one day, so the truck would be looking at a whole new drivetrain any way

 

How much did you find it for out of curiosity? Does it have an AOD (easy way to tell is if it has OD on the column shift or if it has a push button\switch for OD)? I'd do the Rislone flush at minimum until you swap out the drive line. Also try to find out what cam it has, SD systems are VERY sensitive and picky when it comes to cam selection, and a Mustang cam could actually be a poor choice for a truck since a truck requires a different power band than a car.

Is the over drive a button on the shifter or something else you physically move the shifter into? Sounds like the motor might be reving pretty high to get some good HP number since it's a Mustang cam, truck cams normally have the TQ and HP lower in the curve because it takes more to get these heavy things rollin. I wouldn't worry about it though, just use it as another reason to swap the motor out lol.

I was never a fan of all the trucks people say "truck with mustang engine" I see it in broncos, broncos 2's and rangers for sale all the time, its simply never impressed me, funny that im looking at one really lol.

The swap wouldn't be immediate but would it be worth it swapping a truck cam in?
