IF you don't plan on doing much modding to the motor, the six is better than the 302 IMHO. It will give you the down low torque to move big tires and will last longer, take more abuse, than the 302. At 250k miles and one hell of a life sentence to beating, my 300 is still running fine. It really just comes down to whatever you find for the right price.

i knew the torque was about the same I seen the 302 just has some extra horses, Hopeully I can find a 351 but I guess ill see what happens.

wasn't planning on engine mods, simply a lift , probably 6" maybe another 2 inches, 35-37's , possibly lockers and bigger axles if I ever decide to go with bigger tires, regear, electric cooling fan and mite try to rig a jeep snorkle up ...
im really just looking for the engine that will take the abuse and pull me through what ever I put it in, Id really like to get the 351 since its so powerful

beastly for a reason huh, so after regearing you can spin those tires real well in the mud? as i've mentioned several times my real concern is being able to get through anything.. If I could find an old f150 with a 460 I would of already went and looked at it lol... I have a friend with the same set up im looking to build and it has the 6 in it, but he doesn't offroad it so he could never really judge for me how powerful it is offroad.

Im going to look back at some of the 6 cyl. I ignored during my 351 search and see what I find

You should of came down and bought the 80 250 from around here, 79 frame, 80 body, 460, 4 speed 44" tires. It was like 2 grand.

that would of been perfect...I used to only want a f250, and didnt like 150's at all. Now I got to say I love the f150's that why I want to grab one for my beater... Eventually ill have a 7.3 or 6.7 powerstroke

But my uncle used to have an f250 on 44's and somewhere between 12 and 16 inches of lift, 460 in it... he has completely brain washed me that anything smaller then the 351 will fail me, so in my quest for a beater I have passed up many i6's I wish I wouldn't have. Ideally I will stumble upon an ext cab 6 ft bed, Found a few 5.8's that fit it but no 300's. I posted a thread about the f150's with mark 111 interior, going to look at one of those this weekend

Not sure if possible from this picture but can anyone tell if this is a 302 or 351? It doesn't say on the engine and the guy said he doesn't know which engine it was

Look on the intake plenum, it will say 5.0 or 5.8
5.0 is a 302 and 5.8 is a 351

easiest way to tell by looking at the plenum is if the runner are rounded or squared.
5.0=squared
5.8=rounded
Pics:
5.0 (pic of mine):

5.8(not a pic of mine, sorry):
