Timing 1996 300 I6

I have read some of the timing questions thoughout the forum. Is there any difference with the 1996 engines? That was first year of OBD II, correct? Did not know if that changed anything for the timing.

Read some stating different marks are used to correctly time, etc.

Reason why I asked, replaced distributor and going to have to time it, Just want heads up before I try to get it running again.

Thanks

The timing mark you need to use is a pointer at 9:00 (i.e passenger side) right next to the damper pulley. DO NOT use the marks cast into the timing cover. There should be both 0° and 10° lines on the damper so you can use a fixed or a dial-back timing light

Be sure to pull the SPOUT connector before you set the timing. The recommended setting is 10° ±2° BTDC. You will like it better at 12°-14° BTDC.

On SEFI systems, the location of #1 plug is critical, it should be marked on the cap.

If he sets the timing at 12-14 degrees, does he have to listen for pinging?I heard that if you advance the timing you might have to upgrade to a higher octane gas.

12°-14° should not cause pre-ignition with 87 octane fuel on any 300.
The 96 has a knock sensor which will pull out timing when it detects pinging, long before the human ear can hear it.

SPark OUTput.
It is a plug in the wire between the distributor and the Ignition Module. It's on the driver's side in front of the firewall next to the inner fender just before the harness enters the Ignition Module.

It needs to be removed in order to set the base timing.
