Post Gas Tanks

Two months ago I had to replace my rear tank on my 95 F150 Supercab 58,000 due to rust. Well a friend of mine said his wife read in the local paper they were having a problem with the tanks and leaks. Has anyone seen any articles on this?

The NHTSA has re-opened an investigation from the early '90s:

A MALFUNCTIONING CHECK VALVE WITHIN THE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY CAUSES A PORTION OF THE UNUSED FUEL FROM ONE TANK TO BE RETURNED TO THE SECOND TANK. WHEN THIS OCCURS, THE CAPACITY OF THE SECOND TANK CAN BE EXCEEDED, CAUSING FUEL SPILLAGE.

SPILLED FUEL CAN RESULT IN A FIRE WHEN EXPOSED TO A SOURCE OF IGNITION.

REPLACEMENT OF THE FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR AND INSTALLATION OF REDUNDANT CHECK VALVES.

SYSTEM: FUEL; FUEL TANK ASSEMBLY.

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: LIGHT TRUCKS AND CHASSIS CABS WITH GASOLINE ENGINES AND DUAL FUEL TANKS.

Nomo: According to the dealer that problem was corrected in the 1994 model year. I remember having my 93 done in 94. I think he's talking about a whole different matter.

family: Where exactly did the tank rust? only 5 years and 58k miles is a little suspicious, doesn't the rust through protection warrenttee last 6yrs or 100k miles?

I have a '93 F150 4X4 SC Shortbed. Noticed my Rear Fuel Tank was leaking. Examining the tank I saw that it was pretty badly rusted. The fuel was leeching out of the rust. Was wondering how much I can expect to pay for a replacement tank? Looking at my service manual it looks like it is a fairly easy swap, but the book could be wrong...any help on the repair would be appreciated.

The Fuel System recall seems to be dealing with the dual tank return line check valves. I also have this problem, but have learned to deal with it.

I should have stated that I was addressing the "Has anyone seen any articles on this?" question. Just trying to clarify what his friend and wife had read about.

Nailer, are you planning on keeping your F-150 when you get your Superduty? IF not, I wouldn't spend the money on it. Otherwise, I would look for a decent shaped one at a junkyard or recycle shop. The fuel return problem is a recall, you shouldn't be charged anything to have it fixed.

I changed the tank myself. Not a bad job it took me longer to clean up the straps. About 2 hours +-. The tank was an aftermarket steel delivered for $120.00. Ford wanted close to $280.00. Someone else said they saw something about rusted tanks and it may have been in his local paper but from the associated press. Checked there site and past articles but no dice.

Pastmaster:
Yeah, I am planning on keeping the F-150, need a dub around truck. Besides the dealer will only give me $4500.00 on a trade. Kelly BB says it should be worth around $6k. It is worth more to me to keep it and have a spare truck.

I know the fuel system prob is a recall, but don't have the time to get it fixed. Will do after I get the SD 250.

FordFamily:
Good to hear the Tank swap is fairly painless.....now I need to wait for a warm day.

Question?
Are there any "plastic" tanks available for replacement part. And if there are, Are they worth it?

Nailer, I see waht your saying. Also you probably don't want to put alot of miles on your Superduty.

I have heard about Fiberglass tanks, but I don't know about for f-150's,especially previous ones like ours.

What exactly does the recall fix for these tanks involve? As the second owner of a 1991 truck, am I eligible for a recall fix if the owner has not had it done already?

Thanks,

Mike

The recall started back in 1993 and it was for 1990 thru early 1993 F-Series, LD, with dual fuel tanks. The "fix" for the fuel going to the wrong (non-operating)tank was to install check valves in the tanks supply line and replace the pressure regulator. However, as we have seen, this fix doesn't last long and Ford only warranty's it (once) for 12 mo/12,000 miles; after that you are on your own.

The fuel pumps(2), actually fuel delivery modules, each have two internal check valves and if either one doesn't work, you get cross flow. The only fix we have done that works is to replace the fuel pump(s). Parts & labor about $450 for each pump. Yes, we love Ford too.

Father just had his rear tank replaced on his 96 4x4, It cost him 190 dollars to have it taken in a replaced by a small garage. The cause of it was due to rusted and the strap that held the tank in place. Hope this helps. This is how i ended up on this site in the first place.
