Superchips available for earlier Fords too!
To All:
Just a quick reminder to those of you who are driving pre-1997 F-trucks, that Superchips are available for them too. The fun isn't limited to those driving the newest trucks, in other words.
For the 1996 & earlier F-trucks, most of them have their computers in the driver's side kick panel. You can find your computer code either on the computer, or on the wiring harness under the hood, as it leads to the computer at the firewall. The older trucks can have the normal 3 letters and a number code, or, some of them will have codes like U2D, or DH, DJ, etc.
The bottom line is that a Superchip is available for almost every computer-controlled Ford with fuel injection.
Our bests to all,

I will be looking up the code for the 4.9L sometime soon, now that I no what I'm looking for. I am on a pretty tight budget so I will have to call Santa on this one.....Would you happen to know his number?
Thanks again!

Plain and simple, get the chip! I got mine last week and only have one complaint........whoever is in front of me is never going fast enough! If any of you would like to know how to get the computer out, or how to access it, please feel free to contact either Mike or myself. I am very impressed with Mike, Superchips, and the chip itself and will recommend it to everyone interested! If anyone has any questions, I will answer them to the best of my ability. Take care and keep on truckin!!

So what's the advantage of the Superchip over the Hypertech? I didn't find out until after I bought the Hypertech that I needed 93 octanne or higher for the module to work. That really adds up at the pumps. I was also told that it would improve acceleration not just at wide open throttle. I really don't think I got my moneys worth ($350). I've unplugged it and went for a rip, if there was a difference I didn't notice. Is it possible that the chip for earlier trucks like my '92 won't be effective because you can't tune them like the newer ones?
Dear armsrus1,
What Todd is referring to is the fact that we (meaning us here at Performance products) don't discuss our discounted pricing publicly here on the message boards. We don't want to be *blatantly* commercial, in other words. The regular price for the F-150 Superchip is $265 plus shipping, but we offer a substantial discount to F150online members, and guarantee the lowest price in the country to F150online members, as a matter of fact. We ask that you please contact us privately for that price. Our contact info is below for your convenience, and we wish you all the best!
Respecfully,

Dear Obliterator,
No, there is nothing about your older vehicle that precludes it from seeing all the same basic benefits from a good performance chip. You are just one of many who has discovered that the Hypertech unit only adds power when you are at wide-open throttle (WOT). There is a little-known "loophole" in the emissions laws, which is, even for a brand new vehicle, there are no emissions standards that have to be met during wide-open throttle operation. So as a chipmaker, if that is all you modify, (meaning WOT parameters) then you do not have to certify for emissions compliance, etc., and it reduces the R&D cost of the product drastically. Also, with most Hypertech products, you have to use an abnormally cold thermostat as well. Hypertech wants to keep the cylinder head temperature as low as possible, so they can add as much spark advance as possible at WOT. That is their basic tuning technique for increasing horsepower.
The Superchip works *all* the time, from 1000 rpm on up, regardless of throttle position, and does not require any other gimmicks to make it work. (It's also cheaper) The Superchip, like any performance chip, is going to require the use of premium gas. It is the increased anti-knock properties of premium gas that allows us to use more spark advance, and that adds power. Because the Superchip works all the time, most people see some improvement in gas mileage; for some of us, it's enough to offset the additional cost of premium gas. For others, it isn't, and it will add a few dollars per 1000 miles driven to your fuel costs. The bottom line is that no performance gain comes completely free, of course, though under the right circumstances, best case, the Superchip can be free in the long run. Just to give you some examples, with our vehicles here, we are seeing about 3 more mpg. Our gas prices here in Virginia are such that the cost difference between regular (87) and premium (93) is only 10-12 cents per gallon, so for us, the Superchips are actually paying us to use them! What must be pointed out is that this is a best case scenario, of course. There are others who are towing large loads, or who drive with a heavy foot, or do mostly city driving, etc., and whose overall driveing conditions and circumstances preclude them from being able to see much of an improvement in gas mileage. You see, this isn't something that was deliberately designed into the product for the sake of improved gas mileage; rather, it's a by-product of the optimized spark advance curves used on part-throttle, so your results will depend on your driving conditions and your local fuel quality. So-called reformulated fuels will give 8%-10% worse gas mileage, for example.
I hope this helps your understanding of the basic difference between the Hypertech and the Superchip.

Thanks for the quick response, Superchips guy. I wish I would have been in contact with you before I bought the Hypertech. I blindly bought it on faith because no one had any good info. The Superchips product must have came out after the Hypertech because I haven't heard of it before now.
