Cutting off the 2 rear cats

I have a 1997 4.6 and I am thinking of cutting my 2 rear cats off. Will this mess anything up or will everything be alright? I dont want to spend the money for hi-flow cats, this is more of an idea of if I can do it and it will work I will, if not ill leave them alone. Thanks

as long as the cats are you going to cut off are AFTER BOTH of the o2 sensors. Otherwise your good to go. But remember, even if you dont have state inspection its still illegal. Just dont tell too many people about it.

On a 97 you're going to have an O2 sensor after the cats to monitor whether you've tampered with or removed the cats. Enjoy the MIL light, you're going to see a lot of it.

reroute the o2 sensor, takes a drill and file, welder and a nut the same size and thread pitch as your o2 sensor

This is not one of the O2 sensors which are used for feedback control of the closed loop warm-cruise operating mode. It is the third downstream sensor which is looking for post-cat (i.e. clean) exhaust. It exists solely to monitor the function of the cats and sets a code if it detects out of range values.

It can be defeated with a MIL eliminator but why not just leave the cats intact? They cost almost no HP, removing them is illegal and they make the air cleaner. As long as you continue to breathe air I would think you should have a vested interest in that.

BTW this is posted in the WRONG FORUM. This forum is for pre-97 models which a 97 is definitely not.

Alright thanks, and by the way this is the correct forum. It does say pre-1997 models. this means that the 1997 model is included. otherwise they would of made it pre-1996 models.

No.
Learn English.
According to Webster "pre-" means "earlier than : prior to : before." Therefore "Pre-97" means "Earlier than, prior to or before 97" nor "before and including 97"

Or better yet just learn about Fords.
Pre-97 150s are the old square body style with the Twin-I-Beam axles and the 300/302/351 engines. This architecture was carried over into the 97 F250s but we're discussing F150s on this site.

97 began a new series of trucks with effeminate styling, A-arm suspensions and modular engines. Questions about them do not belong in this forum

I'm with Ranger on this one.... a properly functioning cat is much better than no cat. OP, you can replace the two cats with a single 3-way converter. But please don't drive your truck around with no cats at all.
That's all i have to say about that!

Ok, It really didnt bother anyone else, and I got my answers. I only posted this for a buddy that isnt a user. If it really gets your panties in a knot and makes you feel powerful telling people were to post, then please tell me for future post for my buddy where I should post them. This forum site is to talk about trucks and to get help on questions you have about trucks. Wheter or not I was in the correct forum, We still discussed trucks and I got my answer.

It's not a matter of feeling powerful; it's simply a matter of keeping the forum for questions concerning our specific era of trucks. Questions about the newer series of trucks can post in virtually all the other forums and do not need to be cluttering up this one.

The fact that you're too illiterate to understand the meaning of "Pre-97" is a private matter between you and your 3rd grade teacher.

So this post could go in virtually all of the other newer truck forums, but yet there is only 2004 to present, 2009 F-150, 2011 F-100. To me, this doesn't fit any of them at all and this forum is the closest. I have posted in this forum before for this same year of truck and didn't ever have a problem. I got my questions answered and all the help I needed. Next time I will be sure to tell my buddy that I was doing the favor for that there is supposedly no forum on this site for him. I cannot believe that there are immature people that resort to name calling and childish acts instead of just helping another ford truck owner out. I do agree that "pre" means prior to or everything before, but the dash means "to." If you were to work a shift, 8-5, this would mean that you worked from 8 all the way to 5, not 8 to 4. Meaning pre "-" 1997 should include the 1997 model, even though it is a different body style. I can't believe I'm having this discussion with another person over a simple question I had to ask.

Thanks again, Jesse.

It should have gone in 'Powertrain (OEM) / Exhuast"

As for the hyphen, get a dictionary and try reading it. Webster shows the entry for "pre-" (including the hyphen) exactly as I listed it above. The whole point of this forum is to have a separate place to discuss the older generation of Ford trucks and those issues which are not related to the later models. A 97 is not part of that generation and questions related to it do not belong here.

Jesse, it would be like going to a forum that specialized in cassette tape players, and asking how to fix a CD player. The people that frequent the tape player forum may know some things about CD players, but you'd stand a much better chance of getting the answer you want in a CD player forum.

Ok guys, Like I have said 100 times before, before strangeranger decided to cry, I got all of my answers, and to the people that knew what I was saying and helped me out I thank. This was my only question in this forum, I will stay to my own forum, 2004-present.
