My new project 302

To be honest, this probably won't go in a truck, like originally planned, but oh well!

We originally started this project for a 1982 F150 stepside 4x4 we wanted to buy, but decided to put it in this instead:

Don't know yet what I'll do with the current 3.8L motor, but I'm sure I'll find something for it *grin*

Cool! I'm still looking for a vehicle to put my last project 308 (302 +.040) in.

I'm looking for a '72 Pinto.

Actually, one of my pistons got a bit of damage, and if it is too bad, I'll be boring it over .040 also (NAP has oversized pistons for no extra fees)

What're the specs on your beast?

Sadly, not much, but I've got less than $1500 into it out of my own pocket, including quite a few odds and ends that I had lying around. lol. It's got:

TRW 10.5:1 Forged Pistons (.040" over)
Gear Drive
Erson Cam w/.510" lift, 292 duration
Rhoads Lifters
Oversized Crane Pushrods
Crane Cobra 1.7 Roller Rockers
Erson Springs
Edelbrock Performer RPM Intake
NOS PowerShot Plate & Solenoids
Holley 4777 650 Double Pumper
Holley Mechanical Fuel Pump
MSD Blaster 2 Coil (& a 6A box to go with it)
Accel Hi-Temp Super Stock Spiral Core Plug Wires
Aeroquip Hoses & Fittings
All External Hardware is ARP 12 pt Stainless
Currently, the heads are very massaged '79 castings w/ 351 valves, but that may change. I've also got a bunch of different Holley's I can put on it, depending on it's eventual application, but for now, it's got a 4777. I've done some other bits and pieces to it since the pics were taken, but I haven't taken any recently.

It's intended to be a decent grocery getter engine, but I would love to drop it in a '72 Pinto.

Mines got the same intake, a HEI distributor, a Holley 4160, gonna go electric on the fuel pump and do returns, and I have a 292/.534" cam.

I used to have a Pinto with a 351C pounded into it, a local shop ran it at Humboldt. They ran a 350 Vega too.

Sounds nice! What compression, and which heads are you using?

Sounds fun! I'll bet that was a tight fit!

The pistons are also 10.5:1 TRWs.

The heads I'm gonna have to get the story straight on. I tried to ask him about the heads and lifters/valvetrain and I kind of got a muddied answear.

I believe the heads are stock '72 302 heads (though nicely polished and machined) and the rest from a mid-'80s HO, but I may have gotten that backwards, because HOs are rollers, right? Mines not....

The HO blocks went roller in 1985.

I knew the '85 HO was a roller, I just didn't know if the HO existed before '85

All things being equal, a roller engine will give you more performance. Rollers roll, rather than slide, so they wear less. Less friction is always a good thing. They are also better suited to very aggressive lobe profiles with very high lifts for a longer duration. They tend to have much faster opening and closing rates, too.

FYI, starting in 1988 the 5.0L HO (roller) block was also used in F-150's, but it didn't get a roller cam until 1994. Sound confusing? lol. Starting in 1988, the truck 5.0L engines were built at the Cleveland engine plant, which was the same place the Mustang 5.0L HO engines were built, so to save money, they both shared the exact same block. The difference was that they installed a flat tappet cam in the truck engines until '94.

In other words, if you want a 5.0L roller block, you don't have to hunt down a Mustang GT. The majority of 5.0L's built from 1988 on were roller blocks.
