Dash/Gauge Replacement.

Hello again. This is'nt a current project, but a consideration. My old truck had a tach in it. Could'nt figure out why, because it was an automatic, but after a while it became a diagnostic tool of sorts. My new truck does'nt have one, but I want to put one in. Would it be easier to put in a new dash w/ a tach, or add a tach on the dash somewhere? If I replace the dash, what happens with the odometer? Is'nt that some sort of crime to alter the miles shown on a vehicle? I would also like to have gauges that show real info, instead of lo/normal/hi. Could I replace the gauges in the existing dash somewhat easily with mini gauges, add a seperate tach elsewhere, and still use the stock wiring for the minis? Hope this all makes sense, I look forward to your replies. Peace, Dave.

I would recommend adding a tach to your current dashboard. I added a tach and trans temp guage to mine with not much trouble. If you look at my photos (link below) you can see where I put them.

Good luck,
NCC

Howdy!

Any 87-91 (cept for diesels) gauge cluster is plug and play. Also to make it easier try to get one from a truck with the same tranny you have now.

The 92-96 clusters are still plug and play for 92-96 trucks, cept for rear abs to all abs trucks and of course diesels.

The milage in any case stays with the cluster and yes can cause strife if you sell it. Not sure on the 87-91s (drill maybe?), but you can add miles easily with a tone generator on the 92-96s.

I'm lookin for a 93 Lightning cluster...

...to put in the 92 b/c I have this problem...

...and don't know my speed without the GPS.

Hey NC, I was kinda maybe possibly headed along those lines, but I have a 90s dashboard. Where you have your gauges is vent on mine. There is a place below that, where a spot is for the (Ithink) 4WD selection, that I could put one gauge, but the gear shifter is slam in the middle of it in drive. I did see pictures on here someplace, where the person had gauges on the roof strut. That was kinda cool, maybe I'll look into that. Adrian, I assume by the speedometer/tach/vibrations that 90+ is the speed limit where you're at? SWEET! Thank you both for the input. Talk to ya later, Peace, Dave.

I have 4 AutoMeter Sport Comp 2 5/8" gauges in my truck, two on the pillar and two under the ashtray. I also have an AutoMeter 2" fuel pressure gauge on the column, but haven't taken any pics of it yet.

Hey PKRWUD, good to hear from you again. Those were the pictures I was looking at. Definately like the gauges on the pillar, now I have a name for them, thanks. I don't really want to mount a tach to the dash, (interferes with the dust) so I'll have to explore that further, maybe I can eliminate my temp/alt gauge and put one inside there somehow. If there's not any circuit boards in the way. We'll see. Thanks again, Peace, Dave.

I've been offline for a few weeks.

Here's a thought about the tach: I know the clusters are plug and play, and i know, at least on the 92-96, that the speedometer can be easily removed by itself. What I don't know is whether or not the speedo from a tachless cluster will drop right into a tach cluster. If it does, then you just need to get a cluster with a tach and swap your speedo into it.

Ummm, yeah thats our speed limits

The GPS said 97 in that pic and even though it looks like I'm about to go to warp drive or something, the ride is very smooth and just the old camera sucked without being able to use a flash.
