temp guage problem

hey guys. Installed a new temp sending unit a week ago...

Before i installed, i earthed the wire and it showed that the unit was the problem, not the guage.

the install went great (thanks sprockett and mark) but now i notice the guage is only creeping up to the first notch...nowhere near the "normal" zone. i took the wire off the unit and put it back on - it's on tight.

it's cool here in GA but not THAT cool! Any thoughts?

Maybe theres an air pocket in the cooling system? It should work it's way out after a while. Either that or the t-stat could be stuck open, or they gave you the wrong sending unit.

hey jon....That's an interesting possibility. When I changed the units, I lost a lot of coolant. Filled it up of course, but have had to top up twice now.

One day there was a "gurgling" noise after I'd driven, and I checked the coolant level, which was ok, but the noise only stopped after I released the pressure cap on the radiator.

How would I get rid of an air pocket? And excuse the ignorance, but how would I check for an open t-stat?

thanks already tho...appreciate it...

Top off the coolant with the engine running and the heater on.

Yeah do like Sprocket said let it idle with the radiator cap off so that it boils all over the place for a minute or 2 then shut her down and top it off as it cools. Some parts stores might have a funnel that locks onto the top of the radiator so you don't make a mess. An old CV boot fits pretty good to, or you can just let it go and hose the truck off when your done.

thanks again everyone. did what y'all suggested - in fact ran the truck on full heat for ages and it didn't even overflow or anything.

then topped it off through the cap. the guage goes a little higher now - half way between the first notch on the guage and the "n" of "normal".

so i guess it's all working...maybe the truck's running cool is all!

thanks again...
