Because most every idea in this thread is stupid and IMO is going off what looks cool.

Do you think that heavy *** vehicle is going to be awesome in every situation? hell no. The goal is to be a vehicle that will perform good in every situation, not great in 1 and ****ty in every other one.

Whats going to be better in woods, a smaller vehicle or a large one like you posted?
whats going to be better in rocks, a smaller vehicle with flex or a large one that is rock solid?
what's going to be better in mud, a light weight vehicle or a heavy vehicle with military tires?
what's going to be easier to get repair parts for, a military vehicle or a vehicle that was mass produced in multiple countries?
what's going to be better on gas, a huge *** 10 ton vehicle or a smaller SUV?

most of yal are missing the point of a survival vehicle and still thinking on this zombie crap.

You can't have a platform that will excell in every situation. That's why you should build a rig that will perform to your specific needs and terrain.

this looks pretty capable, and it has plenty of space inside to store things.

I'll stick with my 07 F150 Screw short bed. It already has 4WD and a modest motor, 5.4L FFV, 4spd auto. I'd go with super duty axles and T-case, 8" lift over stock, 37" tires 14" wide kevlar material on 16" beadlock rims, 4.88 gears, electronic locking diffs, air compressor and tank system, roof rack with area lighting, camper shell and remove rear window then seal shell to cab, winch with recovery accessories, 3/16" steel plating for armor over the doors, fenders, and hood, expanded mesh over all windows, windows will be plexi, CB radio, GPS (in the event they still work for whatever end-of-the-world event I'm building my truck for), refrigeration and heat in the rear of the camper shell (with a removable hatch over the equipment), food and liquid storage (no problems there, I have cases of MREs at my house), and for the heck of it I might mount an M240B on the roof about a foot high on an electronic rotating system controlled from in the cab on DVD headunit with camera and cross hairs...Oh, and a pair of steel ********* hanging from the rear hitch

I just found and read through this whole thread and I honestly don't whether to laugh or cry....

Either this thread was done as a joke or some people are very optimistic/ignorant.

If things are so bad that you need to bug out in order to survive, so will everyone else. You will be competing for fuel and escape routes. Do you have a target location already in mind? You better, planning on the run is FAIL. Is this a localized evac and you will be staying at aunt Sue's house for a few days or is the nation falling apart around you? If the latter, you will likely be limited to fuel on hand and ATM's and paper money will be worthless. You will get to your EVAC spot and hunker down, you will not be going to wal-mart or star bucks are running pointless errands. The truck and any remaining fuel will be for emergency use ONLY. How old or new it is is pointless at that point as it will hardly be used but when it is, you want it to START. Flooding the carb or it icing up or running poorly due to location is unacceptable. Maintenance is more important than vintage. Short of an EMP, modern cars are MUCH better than their older counterparts if maintained.

You will never be able to take with you the amount of things you want in a daily driver, you need to have an off-site cache/safe zone you plan on getting to. Carrying everything in your truck is not going to happen.

Short of a NBC or natural disaster you will have time to get out if you don't wait around for days and days and let the rioters and looters come to you. This is when a small, reliable truck makes sense, throw a few sea bags with clothes etc in and GO.

For quicker moving emergencies where you will be more heavily competing for road space/fuel/food and hysterical people losing their minds and where you may have to carry more people etc, or will likely face more challenging terrain, you need a purpose built vehicle, not some half baked F-150 that looks like a JC Whitney catalog threw up on it.

In a true emergency where law and order has broken down you can expect highwaymen/road-blocks, looters, riots, mobs, gangs etc If you have something they want, YOU are a target. Moving quickly and decisively is key. Having an escape plan is paramount as well as actually practicing it. Have SEVERAL of the same maps as well as compasses, GPS may or may not work, ALL phone/web/cell service will likely be out/restricted.

So many people have no real plan beyond get in their car and go..where? for how long?, supporting how many people? will where I want to go be safe?, when I get there do I have the things I need to survive?

Having a plan is great, keeping it practical is better. Some of the ideas I have read for building or upgrading this guy's truck, with his intention of keeping it a daily driver are just nuts and impractical, from his postings it SEEMS as if he has champagne taste and beer money. He'd have a $50k 10 year old truck when all was said and done and as a DD it would be terrible...

First of all ScubaCat, are you military?

Second, I just happened to fall into this thread and felt it would be fun to take steps into, whether it be all seriousness or for fun. You make very good points, and I applaud you for it. You came up with a lot of enlightening things that I personally hadn't thought of. I guess for many of us, to dream is a pleasant thing but making a dream a reality feeds satisfaction of some sort, rationally or not. But if there was really going to be some sort of apocalyptic event happening, CBRN or natural disaster, what would be the likely-hood that anyone would even survive? Can we even really prepare for an extinction level event? Probably not.

I just think the thread is fun, allows some of us to be creative and share ideas that even if we don't use by means of "survival", then we could at least have some fun with it offroading and having a tailgate party at an awesome camp site

The biggest issue here is that there is a lack of knowledge on the massive scope of disasters which could occur, everything from a EMP wave emitted by the Sun to a general social and economic collapse could occur. With an EMP wave just about every electronic item we all own would be rendered useless. Hell, a social/economic collapse could occur, leaving millions cold, hungry and armed to the teeth with everything from a kitchen knife to a machine gun. There is so much to say its crazy. You have to keep in mind how will you be acquiring fuel? How do you pump fuel out of the massive storage tanks? Your going to need a pump, hand cranked to assess these fuel supplies. Another item was protection is a must. Seeing that you are preparing for such an event you must consider OPSEC ( Operational Security). Letting others know that you are a "preper" is a dangerous thing. If Joe Blow down the street knows your the "survivalist" type guess whos gonna be knocking at your door, or kicking it in, depending on the desperation. Also, simply being on the road will make you a target. If im hungry, cold, and thirsty and i see you going down the road in that fancy pick-up better believe im going to come after you to A-beg, B- take by force. The best defense you have is your mind, its your strongest weapon
