Ford 9"

Been thinking about swapping in a ford 9" in my harley.

It's a 70 torino big bearing, I'll be putting in a detroit with 3.50 gears and disc brakes... Just trying to weigh my options, and being almost 100lbs lighter than stock, thats my biggest factor so far!

So???? Lets hear some suggestions!

My Torinos parts car I'll be yanking it from

you know what axles are in it? 28 or 31? I have a 31 spline unit in mine and im pushing over 400hp threw it on 38's, i didn't break anything until i did a 3000 rpm launch with 2# or air in my 35 Boggers I stripped the spiders and broke a axle so now ive got a spool and cromo axle shafts and haven't broke anything since

Why?

Less than 100 pounds you'll never notice ... and for that you'll gain nothing you'll need over the 9.75, add the disc, buy the DL, change lug patterns?

Restore the car or run it in the local trader books / ebay / craigs thing / Hemmings. If that's really a Cobra, someone will want it.

This Is my 70 Torino 429CJ Ram-Air, c-6, 9" matching numbers.

Like stated above that was my parts car, I have thought about getting it running but If I do it will be a track only 460 stroked with an 8:71, but I have to many other things that are more of a priority!

Your right about the 100lbs but the next time I go to the track I'll be at around 700lbs lighter, that will make a difference. And the wheels... I already have a few sets of the 5X5.5 one being my 22" Harley replica's(universial 5-lug)

I don't know what spline axles are in there, but I have decided to go ahead and pull it out from underneath the car and go through it.

On a side note,
gears $50
disc brakes $100
positive track (weld spyder gears, free)
already have the rims (22's)
already have the axle (free)

So $150 aint that bad.

LAWD! Torino!?! that thing looks like it has so much potential, its just an axle, do whatcha want, just dont scrap that car unless you know its rotten in too many hard to repair places.

If you're going to be running this on the street you might want to think about welding the rear end. It will not be fun when trying to maneuver. I have a spool in my 9" in the rear of the explorer and it's nasty when it comes to tight turns. I don't drive my expo on the street, just enough to pull it on the trailer but it usually requires a 3-4 point turn to get it lined up.

Do you want your ABS to work and your tranny to shift in the Harley truck? You're going to need some kind of replacement tone ring unless you've bypassed all of that. (I'm not 100% sure the tranny won't shift, but I'm pretty sure it won't work right and it makes my post more dramatic )

You can relocate the tone ring and sensor so that your tranny shifts correctly. I've even seen 8.8" tone rings used with the 9"

8.8 tone ring in 9". Some machining required.
