2001 F-150 clutch pack - where to buy

2001 F-150, 5.4L, 110k.
Has the standard shudder when making sharp turns at low speed.
Service advisor didn't know WTF I was talking about when mentioning posi or "limited slip".

He calls back today and tells me that my "rear clutch" is gone.
I ask him for an estimate: 4 hours labor and $250 in parts = ~$850

I'm not on this forum a lot, mainly because the truck has been very reliable, but I have a few questions:

1) Best place to order parts? (discount dealer)
2) This truck has an 8.8 rear, correct? I've done the clutch packs before on a 5.0L mustang and I think 4 hours of labor is crazy.
3) Spider gears shouldn't need replacement unless damaged?
4) Any other general advice? I remember this as a not fun job dealing with springs, but it's not worth $850 of my money.

same problem

I have the same problem you're having and was wondering if you've found anywhere to buy the limited slip clutch pack, and if you did, how much did it cost?

kevin, did you try to drain and refill the differential? I've read a lot on this site that says sometimes that will fix the problem. how much labor did they say they were gonna charge you?

This goes for the 8.8 and 9.75 rears,it says add 4 ounces of friction modifyer part#C8AZ-19B546-A to diff, like i said i'm gonna try double. The gear lube is
SAE75W-140 GL-5 synthetic gear lube, aprox 5.7pts.These are both ford part #s.The rear diff fill plug, torque to 15-30 Ft-lbs,cover bolts are 28-38 Ft-lbs in increments, don't do it all at once and go all the wat around the dif,if you do it all at once you may warp the the cover.
also when you silicone the diff cover make sure you go around all of the bolt holes besides the original bead you makealso there is something on here somewhere where it is suggested to drive in figure eights after completed.Oh and make the bead about 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch, better to be a lil thick than not enough. Also make sure you scrape both the diff cover and surface of the diff, spray brake cleaner or similar on a rag and wipe the surfaces down before applying the RTV silicone.Make sure you follow the directions on the silicone for curing time. Also when you re-assemble try to get the cover in the right place so you don't have to move it around and screw your bead up.That's all i can think of for now.

Hope this helps,
Kevin

your welcome,I did mine and you should be good w/ 3 quarts weather you do 4 or 8 ounces of modifyer. If you choose not to buy the ford gear oil you must use something that meets it or exceeds it.The ford oil is pricey, like $15 a quart, also the torque specs on the bolts seemed a little much.I just snugged mine after feeling the 30lbs.

You should use the Ford silicone kit - I understand that the synthetic gear lube can eat up anything else and cause leaks. I would not double the modifier.

I have used regular oil resistance silicone and not had a problem last time i changed it.The way i see it i'm pretty sure my clutch pac is screwed so i have nothing to loose by doubling the modifyer. It seems to not be shuddering as much but its kinda early to tell.
