3.55 to 4.10 or 4.56, WHICH ONE!!!
OK, I know this has been talked about numerouse times, but I could not find out exactly what I wanted to know.
I have a 2001 Ford SCREW, 3.55, limited slip, currently have 285.75.16's, will be going to 35's when I get my 4" lift in a couple of months, but truck needs to be VERY drivable with current tire size.
I have been thinking of going to 4.10's, but the more I talk to the shops, sounds like 4.56 is the way to go. I need to be able to drive comfortably on the highway at 85mph with my current 285.75.16's, if I can do that with a 4.56 gear ratio, then thats what I will do, if not I will settle for the 4.10's. Either way, I think I am going to be very pleased, but I am the kind of guy that wants as much power as I can get.
Thanks for your feedback guys, I greatly appreciate it.

You don't wanna go with 4.10s if you're going to 35s later. Gearing is expensive so you only wanna do it once. Since you only have to wait a couple months I'd be planning for the 35s instead of for the 33s you have now. With 4.10s you're going to dog a little with 35s, but with 4.56s you'll have plenty of get-up-and-go. Anyhow with your 33s and 4.56s you're going to run about 2500rpm with an auto tranny and 2850rpm with a 5spd, both speeds are at 85 (don't really know WHY you have to be able to drive that fast anyhow, I'm sure a cop would like to have a chat with you if he saw that speed). 4.56 gears are a little overkill for only a 33" tall tire, but you said its only going to be a couple months of it driving like that, but trust me, if you go with 4.10s and you step up to 35s you're going to wish you'd went with the 4.56s and eventually you'll get fed up with it and drop the money to regear again. Only thing you gotta put up with until the 35s come is a little lower mileage. But look at it this way, with 33s and 4.56s you'll be unbeatable off the line.

If and only if your truck is a 2X4, then there is another option, 4.30 from this site http://www.mad4wd.com/tek9.asp?pg=products&grp=83 , it seems that 4.30 gears would put right around stock, very close. From looking at a chart on this website http://www.4wheelparts.com/Tirel_Gear_Ratio.asp it will give you more bottom end for the boat hauling you have stated in your profile, while not nmaking too much RPM's at freeway speeds as I think the 4.56's would.
I plan in a couple of months to do a body lift with spindle lift and 35 inch tires and have been researching quite a bit and that is my conclusion, 4.30 gears and what i will most likely go with on my future setup.
Just my 2 cents.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the feedback. At this point, I am not sure when I am going to get the lift and tires, and after talking to more shops and mechanics, it sounds like 4.10's is the way to go, so looks like that is the winner. My decision is also based on the idea of getting a supercharger down the road. If I do the supercharger, the 4.10's will be plenty for the 35's.
thanks again, you guys rock
