Rusting Factory Side Step Bar
Rusting Factory Side Step Bar
My '99 SC ORP came with the side steps. Turns out the passenger side step is rusting out. Funny thing is, the driver side is in pristine condition. Gabus Ford in Des Moines says I am out of luck. Looking underneath the bar, it shows it all rusted out too. The underside of the drivers side is rust free and shiny. Is it possible there is some defect going on here? I am not too happy right now. I have owned 3 different 4x4 SC's since 1997. Never disgruntled until NOW!
It is funny you mention this because I have aftermarket step rails (cheap ones black powdercoat) and while they are both rusting, the passenger side is much worse! I can't figure out why because usually it is the drivers side that gets covered with salt and crap in the winter time.
The black tubular cab steps that came on my 2000 started rusting.
The dealer told me this was a known problem and they took them off, sandblasted and repainted them at the same time they fixed my doors for the known rust problem with them.
This was all done under warranty.

Just Ditched Them
Both mine started rusting. The paint started bubbling next to where the plastic tread was then spread. It ticked me off, but after I took them off, I decided I like the look better without them. I'm 6'2" though and getting in and out isn't a big deal. The wife isn't too thrilled though.
Well, I don't have the factory bars on my '98 F-150, but the factory bars on my wife's '98 Explorer Sport are rusting and they look like H$LL!
