How can you tell if your truck is one of the about?
(Purchase this truck but I cannot tell which it is and parts counter people are driving me nuts)
What do these letters stand for anyway? XL XLT

 

do you have a picture of the front half? I can tell you which it is after seeing one. I do not know what the letters stand for though.

You might try a VIN decoder, also I emailed my VIN to Ford and they sent me a neat little sheet that has all the options my truck left the factory with. An XLT is usually a fancier truck than a XL, nicer grille and different interior options.

What does parts place need the trim level for? I have never had one ask me for that.

 

Parts counter guys can only read what is on the screen in front of them.
My truck has no: electronic lock or windows!

 

Sounds like a XL. XLTs have power windows and door locks.

I haven't looked at the pic yet, but I can tell you that if your truck didn't come with power locks or windows or mirrors, it's not an XLT. Those are pretty basic options on any XLT. I think all XL's came with manual locks and crank-up windows. Some XL's got tilt/cruise, but it was an option, but are standard equipment on XLT's. Some XL's got factory tachs, but most don't have those either. So, if you don't have a tach, tilt/cruise, or power windows/locks, you don't have an XLT. As far as your question about the differences, those initials have been around on Ford trucks for over 25 years. The XL was the more base model for somebody who just needed a truck, and an XLT used to be the top-of-the-line, then along came Eddie Bauer and Lariat models, and after that the King Ranch, which I love! Hope this has helped.

I just looked at your pics, and you do have an XL. There's also a difference in the mirrors which I didn't mention. "Some" XL's, and all XLT's and higher have a molded mirror design. The mirrors that just look like a skinny stalk with a small mirror that pivots on the end is definitely an XL (stock equipment, that is). However, I love the Navigator conversion and would love to do that to my '98 Lariat SuperCab. The only thing I don't particularly like is the flashy chrome grille. My truck has been de-chromed as much as possible with a grille and bumpers painted to match the body. I love the color, too. Nice truck. Enjoy!

I'd have to agree, if you got no power options and no cruise than its an XL, mine is an XL and I got power nuthin', no tach and no tilt/cruise.

 

I agree, from looking at your mirrors, you have an XL.

I've got an XL, but the Sport package gave me the tach, cruise, and tilt steering.

Power nothing else, though. I was satisfied with that.

My Ranger XLT I just got rid of...none of that and I swapped in the tach cluster!
