shaved door handles
has anybody here checked out the cost of shaved door handles? i haven't been able to get anybody to give an estimate. i would probably pull off the side emblems at the same time, cut down on paint costs if i were to do it later. any info will help.
Almost any body person should be able to do the shaved door handles without any extra charge if your getting the door or truck painted...its the wiring and the poppers that cost alot. recommended poppers are the ones from autoloc...every day use requires the 50lb silenoids. runs about 300.00 bucks.
I disagree with the post that it shouldnt cost anymore to get the handles shaved if you are already repainting it. Shaving the handles would cost a considerable amount of labor. The paint wouldnt be any extra charge but the labor is high. I had a quote of 525 labor and about 250 material to shave mine due the the curves of the door thought that was quite reasonable. but not in my price range.
I have owned 2 cars with shaved handles and here is what it ran me: About an average of $250.00/handle which included the paint and clear coat. The thing is, it takes a real good "body person" to do this because when they weld in the filler panels, it has to be done very slowly and very gently because the constant heat from the welder will shrink the metal and cause the panel (door) to warp. The more you warp, the more Bondo body filler you get. It is a time consuming process and not EVERY body shop can do it. Shop around and find yourself a good ole Hot Rod shop or Hot Rod guy to ask him where he gets it done at. Also, on the door poppers...here is what I used: A Viper alarm with extra outputs (any good RELIABLE reliable alarm will do as long as it has extra outputs available. For "poppers" I actually used OLD Volkswagon Beetle starter solenoids. The end of the solenoid has a threaded shaft that I used to install an L bracket to and bolt it on using the existing threads in the solenoid. Obviously I had to fab up some brakets to bolt inside the door body to mount them. Finally I used some 1/8" cable and cable ends to secure the latch ends to the solenoid ends for the means of "popping" the door latch. If you have your stereo shop or alarm installer do the wiring UP TO the inside of the door, all you do is ground the solenoid and connect the lead from the alarm (actually from a relay)to th solenoid and its good to go. Sorry so long, hope it helps.

I guess the reason i say it doesnt cost extra to shave the door handles but to install the kit is because im getting my whole truck painted with ground effects, shaved antenna, door handles, gas tank, molded ground effects for only 1800.00. The guy told me that anything i want shave isnt gonna cost me extra. You can get the kits at www.autoloc.com
