Taillight Mod

I'm considering doing a taillight mod on my truck. I'm just wondering if anyone has taken apart the taillights on these trucks yet, and if so what did you have to do to get the lenses off? I see some guys have been putting their headlights in the oven and melting the glue to get them apart?? Is this how it is done, and will it work with taillights? I did a search but came up empty handed.

It is an ancient chinese secret. But the basics of it is taking the lense off one set and putting it onto another set. How do you guys suggest going about the disassembly?

Hi.

https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...4&postcount=14

Reason I suggested a trial run on a sacrificial junkyard unit is, the mass of the head versus the tails is different. I suspect the tails would require slightly less time.

Good luck

Okay good, my plan was for taking apart junk yard pieces.. What I wanna do is take the guts of an LED taillight, and put a Factory Ford lense on it. That way it doesn't have that ugly tumor, or some rice rocket euro style lense, but it is LED still..I don't know how the heat will affect the LED Tails..I haven't bought anything yet, I'm still thinking over the idea.

I see your concern.

A couple of observations: the LEDs and associated electronics should be able to withstand a short-term exposure to the degree of heating required.

Most solid state devices, if you look on data sheets for LED's and drivers for example, have a reasonably high storage (i.e unpowered) temperature rating: typically -65 degC to +150 degC. That's over +300 degF.

If this is in reference to disassembling a LED tail to extract guts - you could just apply mechanical trauma - no heat. For the modded tails, reassemble with some sort of epoxy, etc, adhesive - again, no heat.

Do you think the taillights could withstand the mechanic force of me trying to pull them apart? I'd have to snap that plastic lense or the body of the lights. Do you guys think some time and elbow grease and a heat gun could pull them apart.
