backup camera

i was thinking of putting a backup cam on my truck since my double din supports it but dont know where i should mount the camera. i was thinking maybe in the keyhole of the tailgate since i put a power lock actuator in it and dont need the key lock anymore. i was also thinking of drilling a hole for it in the bottom of the tailgate through the plastic molding. any suggestions? has anybody installed an aftermarket cam on their truck? any pics would be greatly appreciated!!

I picked one up that runs across the top of the license plate on ebay for about 35.00 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...209036392&rd=1

I mounted mine right above my license plate. Good view of everything.

I just did the 08 tailgate handle and ebay camera. Really easy to wire and works great. I even wired in a switch so I can turn the power to the camera on and off. The only problem I have is the change in weather has cracked the lens already as I know I haven't hit it with anything. I wanted a down angle for hooking up a trailer and backing up as the straight out angle I don't think would be as beneficial seeing distance.

I'm sure you can but i would think judging the distance would be a little more difficult.

We carry the parts at www.TascaParts.com there are a couple of options for the handles. The basic textured black one like the stock one is 8L3Z9943400AC and the textured Black handle with the chrome pull (lariat edition) is 8L3Z9943400AD they are also available as the MarkLt handles painted with the chrome pull, the camera is a separate piece.

this part number is only the handle and does not include the camera/mirror/loom(s)

Principles of Operation

NOTE: The tailgate must be closed for correct operation of the video camera system.

The rear video camera system is used to assist the driver while reversing or parking the vehicle. The video camera is located in the tailgate release handle. The image of the area behind the vehicle is displayed in the left portion of the interior rear view mirror assembly. A dashed line on the displayed image represents the center of the vehicle and three color coded lines (red, yellow, green) identify different zones between the rear of the vehicle and objects.

CAUTION: The color coded lines may not indicate accurate or consistent distances between objects located behind the vehicle and the rear of the vehicle. This normal condition is due to variances in vehicle ride height, including, but not limited to, vehicle loading.

The signal from the rear video camera is sent to the interior rear view mirror display on a pair of shielded video circuits. The displayed video image is horizontally inverted from that viewed from the video camera perspective to mimic a conventional mirror image. The rear video camera system is active with the ignition in RUN and the transmission selector in the REVERSE (R) position. The system remains active for approximately 3 seconds after the transmission selector is moved from the REVERSE (R) position. The rear video camera system cannot be disabled during these conditions.

I looked everywhere I could and was unable to find out what video format the factory setup is.

Also it is so cost prohibitive to add to a truck that didn't come with it.

Just the inside rear view mirror list for $800

That is very interesting...I did not know about the color coded lines. The obvious question is where are the color coded lines added....in the camera or in the mirror. My reason for asking is whether or not it is feasible to connect the factory camera to another video display...say to a Kenwood or Pioneer video dash system and have it operate in a similar manner. I've also noticed that the mirror can be bought directly from the mfr for significantly less.

Your thoughts Ed?
