so if this holds true, I would say the camera will work with Kenwood or Pioneer etc. I think the lines are in the mirror to gauge distances to obstacles. I'll see if I can come up with more info.

Anytime Ford gets involved they have a markup that I would die to be able to make. I get to squeeze by with 20% to 40% while they make 400% to 1000%
I received invoices from Ford vendors in the past where there cost was like $0.22 cents and my cost was $18.00. I know they have to box it ship it and pay someone to process it all. But dam share the wealth, but then again there are dealers out there that refuse to make a buck and ***** up the market and give it away so it wouldn't matter what the cost was.

I would buy the mirror direct if you can.

Normal Operation
With the ignition switch in the RUN position, the video camera receives voltage through circuit 294 (WH/LB). With the gear selector in REVERSE (R) position, a reverse voltage signal is sent to the rear view mirror, enabling the system. The video signal from the video camera displays an image on the left portion of the rear view mirror display.

All I need is a diagram of the wire layout. Whether it be through a BS connector or RCA to make it work...

Ive got it. I figured out how to make it work with the help of Tasca Auto Parts.

You will need 3 Things, 12v Switched, Ground and a one RCA cut in half.

12v+/0: needs to be connected to Pin 1 (White/Lt. Blue - 18ga)
Ground: to Pin 6 (White - 18ga)
RCA Center Pin: Pin 4 (Red/Yellow - 18ga)
RCA Outside Pin: Pin 5 (Black/Yellow - 18ga)

 

The Reverse signal is housed in the Mirror. When put in Reverse no signal is sent to the camera. Instead it turns the monitor in the Mirror on. If you were to put a 12v switched to the Reverse signal, the monitor would stay constant. Or if you wanted to make that a screen it is also possible.

 

Pardon the ignorance, but is this just a replacement stcok assembly with the keyhole hogged out so a camera can be mounted?

 

Its the 2008 Tailgate handle with a separate hole for the camera.

 

That is some very good information there! But Im not 100% sure where these pinouts are from, the mirror or the tailgate.

Reason I ask is I have a few mods in mind for my 08 with the Reverse monitor in the mirror. I am about to install my D3 and was wondering if there was a way to get the video feed from the factory camera into the D3 for reverse. Before I decided to get the D3 i had wanted to find a way to turn the reverse camera on anytime I wanted, like if I was driving down the highway and wanted to take a look at the load in the trailer. From what I read here I should be able to tap into those pins and run an RCA cable to the D3 and view the video. You say the camera is powered reguardless of gear, so I should be able to view the camera output on the D3 going down the highway also? Sounds like exatly what I want if I can figure this all out.

 

Exactly. The pins are at the camera. And that info is so you can use the cam for reverse.

If you want you can also turn your mirror into a screen for the D3...

Why would you do that??? Why not trace the wire into the cab and cut it and wire it in from there? Much shorter...

Mirror - Wire RCA on to the other side of the leads. Then feed 12v+ into the reverse wire (Dk. Grn/Yellow - Pin 2 - 18 ga).
That will turn the reverse mirror on for use as a second screen.

 

Tasca, you seem to have a decent price on the handle. Do you know the diameter size of camera that will fit?

I didn't have much luck tracing the reverse wire in my 03 when I installed a backup cam, so I got tired of messing with it and ran a long wire to the tail light. I will search out these wires though, thanks for the great info.

 

I just got the handle today and measured it with calipers. The hole size I get is .815" dia. by about 1.725" max depth clearence. In mm is is about 20.70mm X 43.81 mm dp. Looks like you can widen the hole up to .965" or 24.76mm. I am looking for a camera now but am having a fun time finding that hole size without widening the hole. I did see Sharp makes one here http://www.sharpvision.cn/waterproof/cw637.htm that would be a great size.
